The Return of The Mixtape - the September 2024 Spin Challenge!

Day 13 - Ugh, another mix…
Play something that’s been issued or reissued multiple times… anniversary editions, deluxe editions, 33rpm, 45prm, remasters, audiophile pressings, colorways galore… how many versions do we need? Alternatively, play something you have multiple copies of.

INXS "Kick"
(1987 Atlantic; 2022 AP 2x45 reissue)
So I worked backwards for this selection, trying to figure out what would go well following the funky Andy by Les Rita Mitsouko, and INXS was an obvious choice to me. The choppy guitar riff from Need You Tonight is a perfect follow-up. Turns out I have two copies of this album at the moment, and both are 2x45 rpm. The new all-analogue AP version is a massive improvement over the Miles Showell Abbey Roads half-speed though.

Track 1

Jessie Ware - What’s Your Pleasure?
Song - Spotlight

The Art of the opening album track is one of my favorite aspects of listening to albums. A good opening track can make or break an album and often the opening track ends up being my favorite track on a given album. So narrowing this down to one for today could have been a daunting task but I think if I am making a mixtape, this is the song I want opening it. The soft and beautiful opening, leading into a killer groove and then transitioning into pure disco perfection

Track 3 (sequencing issues)

Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
Song - Impossible Soul

This song is such a behemoth that it completely changed the vinyl track list. Part 5 of this 25 minute song is placed on Side C when the rest of the song is on Side D. Basically ruins the vinyl listening experience for the whole album

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
IMG_9294.jpeg
I currently own two copies on vinyl (used to have three but got rid of my stereo pressing) and this cassette tape from 1988. I also used to owned the 35 year anniversary CD reissue which was the version that I originally fell in love with. This tape version sounds like dog shit.

Day 6 - Mixtape downloads

Play an album that was originally available as a mixtape download, or play/stream a mixtape download. Or play some old-school hip-hop.

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill

225 different versions of this on Discogs, I think that counts. Adding What is Life? to the mixtape, as the the fuzzy guitar gives it a nice linkage to Que Beleza.

Day 12 - The world music mix
“Music of the soul” – Winston, as he hands over a mix CD containing tracks from Mulatu Astatke and other Ethiopian artists to his neighbor Don Johnston, who is about to embark on a quest to find the son he just found out about, Broken Flowers (directed by Jim Jarmusch, 2005).
Play something by an artist that is anything other than from an English-speaking country, or that is in a language other than English.
