The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

@Lek just wanted to chime in and say the 1st gen of GR's tonearm lift was so bad that I returned it, it just totally affected the usability of the table for me. A quick Google yielded I wasn't the only person experiencing the issue.

I know it seems like a small thing, perhaps it won't matter to you, but I haven't heard anything negative about that in the MK2 version.
Mine was a little jumpy for like two weeks then it settled in. It's never been an issue on my end.

I’m going to be the heretic and recommend you also check out the Denon dp3000ne. It may be what you’re looking for in terms of looks, functionality, and price point.
I have started looking at this. It is a very nice looking table. Certainly think it is nicer than any of the technics. Just not a whole lot out there on it. Best i see that for the same price as the GR2 it seems just a tad lesser the table.

Now as i have nothing for a turntable now....a basic AT model i got for temp and to convert anything in this step up will be a massive improvement....but...that justification to spend the same for "less"?...even if just a tad....or another 1k for theoretically more with the 1300.....

i am driving myself nutZ
🙃

I hear you. If you can stretch the budget got for the 1300. It looks to be a lifetime TT. YOLO!

I think a 1300 is in my future after I sell some extra gear I have. I flirted with getting a 100c, 1500 , or GR2 but know ill still have in itch if I do. So I'm going to be patient and save up my $$$ and buy once, cry once. I feel I'm at a point in my gear journey where I want to streamline and simplify my setup.

In your position, I would actully probably opt for the GR2 if you think you'll get the upgrade itch again at some point, my thinking there is that if you go 1300G, I PERSONALLY would be looking at my 1300G and be happy for a while and then start thinking about "bUT is the 1200G better and if so how much?" but then you upgrade to the 1200G and the upgrade experience may not be as satisfying as jumping from a GR2 to a 1200G but alas the money is spent.

I’d look at that pitch control and strobe light and go “nah I’m good” and then start coveting the SP10R…

Never in my mind would i have thought i would consider a table more than 1k. But i am....and....I know to some degree it is silly, but for 2k+, if i do not like the way is looks despite how well it may perform, it is kinda money wasted. I am just really turned off by the whole pitch control crap on the table and i am certainly a bit lost why they did that on a 4k+ table. In any event i have the AT knockoff and really hate looking at it. So the more i think about it, the more i drive myself nutz, the GR2 is not likely going to happen.

There will not be another table upgrade after this....so........

Perusing the HiFi News files today and decided to compare the SL-1200GR2 measurements to those of the SL-1000R.

👀

Kinda flabbergasted by how close they measure for the difference in price and the 1300G is thought to be even better.

While the SL-1000R is still clearly the flagship, but the 1200GR2 is no slouch.

Edit: The HiFi News article is for the 1200GR2; I changed the text above to correct this.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this hobby, it’s that people get WAY too hung up on measurements, and it’s almost always justified by spending less.

I honestly don’t see the point of the 1000R. If I was spending that kind of money on a technics I wouldn’t want the technics tonearm. I’d get the 10R and totally different third party tonearm.

I generally agree with you. For the $10k upcharge of their plinth and arm, I think I'd go a different direction. It is a 10" arm, but still not one I'd likely take as a first pick. The only advantage I can think of is that they do have a series of arm boards available to bolt into that specific plinth, including a bank that someone could machine for any arm in theory.

I'm also not playing on that level, so it doesn't matter all that much to me. I'd get a LOT of other things first.
