Me: “Me, me, me, me, me!”

Kathryn Calder – Kathryn Calder

Hope your birthday was awesome!

I assume you'd love this, given you're a fan of The New Pornographers and Kathryn is one of their ilk. My favourite of the bunch, in fact!
I've never seen The New Pornographers live, but I've seen Kathryn a few times - even shared a bill with her once. She's an absolute delight.

Have not heard this before, but you’re spot on! Really enjoying this!

Them: “You’ve got to listen to this. It’ll change your life!” (watches for reaction, smile slowly grows)
You: (puts other headphone on): “… uhh, yeah, I’ve heard this. It’s... it's just the ‘Happy Birthday Song?”

The Needles & Grooves forum (and the VMP forums before it) have introduced me to numerous new artists that I certainly would have never heard of without it. Play a record that you own only because you heard of it from N&G.

Jeez, where do I start. I've learned of so. much good music, so many great artists here. So again, I'll go recent. This artist was I believe a discovery from @avecigrec and it prompted me to join Arts & Crafts Record Club for three months so I could get three of his albums.

If your house was on fire, after saving your family/friends/roommate/humans/pets, you have time to grab only one record before you’re out of there. Which one is it and why-erm, “Bay City Rollers,” you say? What the hell?

Hmm, tough one. I would probably grab a handful of Bowie records from the Kallax, most likely the 70s-80s cube. So let’s do that. Close my eyes and out comes…

“Oh yeah, I remember them! Didn’t they break up years ago?”

Play one of your favorite artists that is way overdue for releasing a new album, or that you would love to get back together. What album sold you on this band/musician in the first place?

I feel MK is at least somewhat overdue after this release in 2019. The growth from his first to his third album has me pretty excited about what comes next.

I've discovered TOO MUCH goodness to fully track, thanks to this forum. One of my favourite corners is the N&G AOTM, where I've discovered many new favourites along the way. This was @scotthilk's pick the first time he curated and is perfectly in the vibe that I want around the house right now!
Thanks so much for posting this!! So happy to hear that you like it!!

“Dad, what do you cherish most?”
“Well, you, of course. And your mother. And my butcher cover copy of the Beatles’ Yesterday and Today.”

Julia Holter - Loud City Song (signed)

Because it is the record that completely transformed my understanding of what a single artist's vision could achieve in a single album. Ethereal, chaotic, comforting, whimsical and dissonant, you say? Loud City Song is characterized by all of the above in a package under <45 min.
It changed my world, but on the opposite end of the spectrum of joy like an unsalvageable house fire would.

Me: “Me, me, me, me, me!”

So today, it’s not about you. It’s about me, because it’s my birthday. You have a few options:
Play something that you think I’d love
Play something that you know I love
Play an artist that shares this birthday with me
Play an artist from my hometown (I’ll accept Seattle but you’ll receive a digital high-five if you can be more specific with Tacoma, WA)
Play an artist from my current area of residence (Alabama or Florida)

Happy Belated Birthday @Wes C. Attle

I found something I own that is in your Discogs wantlist - and a sub I actually submitted to Discogs. 3 years ago today I started having issues with the submission where users kept wanting to enter a release year with inaccurate source - it went on for a year. Now...2010 may be the correct release year, but the source they kept using had different runouts - Steve Rooke's SRz etching vs Sean Magee's i..i

About ten years ago I saw this at a Barnes and noble and it didn’t have a price tag on it so I asked an employee who rang it up and told me it was $40. I thought she was crazy, there’s no way a record would ever cost that much. Now look!

While the idea of saving a record or 2 would be nice...and the thought of my collection burning up causes slight anxiety - I think of it more of way to start over, curate rather than hoard. Sometimes I feel that my collection owns me...but it still isn't enough for me to WANT to get rid of it. A fire would be like ripping off the band-aid...as long as I was compensated well from the insurance.

But to answer the question - I'd probably try to save my high value records - Tool - Ænima, some box sets and soundtrack/scores I really like that would be hard to replace.

But I'd make a concerted effort to grab this - and other adjacent Bowie albums, including the black vinyl copy of this for a backup.

Day 23: “IIIIIIII… want to thaaank you.. for giving me the best day of my liiiiife”

Prince - The Gold Experience

There were just two copies of this at the shop I was at on RSD last year. The guy in front of me snagged the last copy but let me have it when I said that it was the only record I was after (it was a low priority on his list, apparently). I’m still very grateful to that guy for letting me have it & I’m hoping he was eventually able to get a copy for himself.

But I'm going with Pulp!
Different Class was my introduction to the band. Their run from "His 'n' Hers" to "We love life" was amazing. Jarvis Cocker is such a great lyricist and his delivery....
And they played a new song on tour! Hopefully it's not a one off.

Can't believe I'm actually seeing them tonight.
Very excited!

The Clash "London Calling" (1979 CBS Japan)
I probably should take a Talking Heads record, but then I'm going to hang out with @gafacaode and he already took one. So I'm set. Plus @jamieanderson1968 and @LeeVing are bringing the Bowie. @imtheocean has the Pearl Jam covered and @Wicked Dreamer is supplying the Creedence (the Dude abides!). So I'm taking this. Absolutely love this pressing. The bass, the clarity, the instrument separation... so good. Plus it's a double LP chock full of awesome songs with a nice level of variety. Hope you guys won't mind, but I'm going to be cranking this.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I’m thankful for all of you making it this far. Play an album/song that represents what you’re most thankful for, or just a record that you are thankful to own.

To many awesome PIFs from very generous people over the years to single one out so instead I am thankful this album got a non-RSD reissue.

OMG they're touring!!!! That's awesome. Can I go with you?
That would be so cool. You'd be more than welcome!
They fucking killed it. It was unbelievable.
Jarvis is a fantastic frontman.
They played their new song for the second time!

Play an artist that shares this birthday with me

Carly Rae Jepsen - E*MO*TION Side B

IMG_6414.jpeg

A little behind because my in-laws are in town and if they caught me taking pictures of my records as I played them, I wouldn’t hear the end of it. They stepped out for a bit..

For my birthday party music festival, we’ve got Bjork, Blur, Violent Femmes, and Carly all playing a set. Ken Griffey Jr, Goldie Hawn, Troy Aikman, and the guy who works in the pharmacy at my local Publix are also there to celebrate our birthdays.

The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat

No hesitation with this one, as the experience of having Lou sign this in person and taking the time to talk with me about the album and its cover was something I’ll never forget. Patti Smith’s Horses would be a close second, as she signed that one for me, too, but was just accompanied by a polite smile (certainly not complaining)

Cheers!

Gonna cheat a little, since I picked this up at Black Friday RSD today. Got there a few minutes after opening, was surprised to still see a few copies of this left. Very happy to have it spinning while I start preparing my turkey for a Friendsgiving later today.
