Upcoming/Recent Shows

Last show of the calendar year next week and I'm actually going to be a credentialed photographer, so I'm kind of nervous about that.

Here's some shots from shows I've seen since the last time I posted:

We are down in South Carolina for Goosemas. Spent two days in Charleston and moved up to North Charleston yesterday, to stay close to the venue, North Charleston Coliseum.

Got to hotel around 2:30 yesterday and decided to walk over to the venue. We could hear they were soundchecking, and could actually see in through glass doors. A worker dude was walking towards us on his way out of the building and asked if we wanted to go in. Well, hell yeah we did! We got to spend about 10 mins inside watching soundcheck until they kicked us out.

Last night the wife and I drove 90 miles - much of it through a wild snowstorm - to see Dean Johnson play in one of our favorite rooms: The Trout Lake Hall at the foot of Mt. Adams, in Washington State. The building has had many iterations over its 120 year history, currently serving as a community gathering space, restaurant and bar, and music venue. Mostly artists from the PNW, but this includes many that tour far and wide such as Dean.

The room had no fewer than three Christmas trees decorated with ornaments and lights, and it was dumping snow outside for much of the show (8-10 inches on the ground when we left). Due to the weather, it was a small but intrepid audience - with maybe 50 or so folks gathered. We ran into a number of friends who had also made the trek out from Portland, which only added to the ambiance, and got to see old friend Garett Brennan open the show.

It was our 5th time seeing Dean in the past 13 months, and he did not disappoint. It was a solo show, and he charmed all of us with songs from Nothing for Me, Please interspersed with a range of stories. He also played a slate of songs from his yet-to-be-released second album (due in August 2025).

It was a memorable night. I had a lengthy chat with Dean before the show. He's about the nicest guy imaginable. Forgot to bring my LP (again), so it remains unsigned. Next time!

Goosemas was a total blast. Exhausting two nights, but so much fun. Goedde's lighting was phenomenal, a great crowd and the band sounded fabulous. The bingo gimmick is so great, we loved watching the oringinal bingo during covid, so glad they did this. Found it amusing that when we got into soundcheck on Friday, we witnessed the secret grand finale (Franklin's Tower) which undoubtedly was part of teh reason they shut the "garage door" so no one else could see anything. Now we really want to go to NYE in Austin!

Can't wait to listen to these shows on Nugs!

I covered the Ally Coalition Talent Show for my friend's publication last night. It's an annual fundraiser that has recently been considered "an event" due to the unannounced lineup/the possibility that any of Jack Antonoff's friends/collaborators could show up on stage. Here's a few people who performed last night.

KMRIA (Kiss My Royal Irish Ass) Pogues cover band last night in Portland!

A Pogues Tribute Band featuring an all star cast of Portland musicians.Up from the bogs to celebrate and mourn the passing of beloved songpoet Shane MacGowan, once again KMRIA will be performing faithful renditions of the Pogues' mix of traditional Irish music and punk rock. Drawing from the records Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, Poguetry in Motion, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Peace and Love, and Hell's Ditch, many of the most beloved songs in their repertoire will be covered. The show features as much grit, bluster, and drunken glory as can be mustered without sacrificing the intricacies of the material. The name KMRIA is an acronym for "Kiss my Royal Irish Ass" excerpted from James Joyce's Ulysses and used in the Pogues song "Transmetropolitan". The band includes Hanz Araki on flutes and whistles, Ezra Holbrook on guitar and vocals, Chris Funk on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, Derek Brown on drums, Scott McCaughey on guitar mandolin and vocals, Casey Neill on guitars bouzouki and vocals, and Jenny Conlee on accordion and keyboards. Everybody sings... and that means you too."I heartily subscribe to this effort. Why, I even gave Funk and Conlee directions how to play the impossibly arcane middle section of Bottle of Smoke, which neither Jem (who wrote the damn middle section) nor Terry Woods (who never plays the same thing twice) can actually get through without extemporizing. Neither can I, truth be told. But at least I know how it's supposed to go."JAMES FEARNLEY of the POGUES
