Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I'd want to see the anthology happen mostly so I could hear underground classics that I've missed (I haven't listened to most of the classics since I explore music really nonsensically,) but I'd definitely like to see some El-P and Aesop in it. Those are two whose older music I haven't heard in full and I know I'd like their old albums.

Sounds like you want Def Jux stuff.

So a couple of things come to mind...

1. It would be nice if VMP confirm if there will / will not be a reprint of the cover
2. It would be interesting to hear Blue Notes official response to this as they were involved too.
3. If there's gonna be no reprint, could we get the images from Blue Note and approach a printers to get this done ourselves? Any idea of cost if there's a sizable number of people who want it done? Would add to the uniqueness of this quirky box set!

Okay that's three, I got carried away.

Agree, but those questions would better be asked at their official forum. Oh wait, i´ll see myself out.

I'm not seeing anyone really reference the Night at the Opera debacle. In that case, they reprinted 20,000 jackets because text was slightly out of place. It was a mistake, to use VMP's own words, that most people likely wouldnt notice. An excerpt from their post about the mistake:

This is an error that many people probably wouldn’t notice, but is incorrect nonetheless. As a company, we pride ourselves in putting our high quality product and a defect like this directly contradicts our company value of details are everything. Our QA process is rigorous and there are many safeguards to prevent things like this. However, we take full responsibility for this error and have already updated our QA process to include an additional level of approval before going to print

The difference is that the Dextzer Gordon cover is not seen as a mistake, but was intentional. In the response quoted above they decided it was the best option they had. I´m not really in a position to judge if that is true, but their reaction is not suggesting that their seeing this a s a mistake with theire product, therfore i would not expect any reprints or refunds.

I agree that's why they chose to frame it that way in their response.

That's what's so baffling about it. I'm not even one of those Blue Note experts. I am, however, an attention to detail vinyl nerd. But, if I'm sitting in a meeting at VMP and someone says we're doing a reissue of a record on vinyl from one of the most prestigious labels in the world and, by the way, we're gonna use the CD art work. "We're doing what?!?!" I'd be interrupting that meeting immediately and making it clear that we're going to regret this.

It still might have not been ideal, but at least let us know beforehand that it's not the exact reproductions of the art work. Would have softened the blow a bit.

I got in just before it sold out and after really going back and forth with myself whether it was a smart purchase. In the end, I thought, it's Blue Note. It's their first attempt at a premium product. Their reputation is on the line here. No way they're not going to mull over every little detail, because let's be honest, their "experience" marketing meant to me, every-little-detail, and get it perfect.

This mistake or, only choice, as seems is their defense, just sullies the whole thing right out of the gate. It's not the end of the world, but it is a friggin' major bummer!

To take it a step further, this should have factored into the feasibility of this specific record for inclusion into the box, along with the condition of the tapes, mastering etc. If any of it is not ideal, then they could have just picked a different album from the get-go. Or as you say be up-front about the issue (I know, I know, not their strength).

Absolutely.

I am still getting caught up on the situation, but this is not a good look and I would like some resolution because we all paid a premium for this anthology.

Damn, i just wrote an e-mail to Cs asking when my Jim James records will be shipped and now i´m probably in the cue behing 800 people complaining about that dexter gordon cover
it is a different email address for the Anthology but who knows if it goes anywhere different

Yes, I emailed Blue Note (their store unfortunately because I couldn't find another place to email), I hope they do chime in

There are two 2008 releases and both of them have the original front and back, I am not buying the story at all that they intentionally chose to use these, I mean they edited out the extra track the CD on the back, how hard would it be to do the same thing to the CD number on the front,I think this was clearly an oversight, this wouldn't be the first time VMP had an issue with getting something printed wrong and not give a heads up (Snoop, "oh we didn't know you couldn't do X with Y")

Will be receiving mine today, so I'll be able to see how the covers look first-hand soon. I think it should be reasonable for them to get new jackets designed and printed in time to send with the final shipment. I mean, even if the original artifacts don't exist anymore - couldn't they re-create it to be fairly close using the same fonts, spacing, etc?

or just scan either of the two 2008 releases

I think that I have the answer for that. I emailed the anthology address and told them yesterday that I had seen lots of people get their shipping notices in the last several days and many people actually have the package already and I hadn't even received a shipping notice so I wanted to know if anything was wrong. I got an email back saying that their records show I received my package last Monday. Upon clicking the tracking info they included as proof of this, it was clear they were talking about my monthly VMP shipment and had no clue I was talking about the anthology. To me, this means it all goes to the same place and their CS is almost as clueless as the rest of the operation. Luckily, I had received my shipping notice for the anthology right before the CS reply.
