Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Just throwing my 2 cents into the mix as I have just caught up on the last few pages.

I haven't bought any of these box sets yet, but the only reason I didn't manage to get in on the Blue Note was because I was abroad at the time without internet. I was, and probably still am, annoyed that I missed it. The reason I was so interested was because Blue Note is up there as my favourite label, so to explore some albums, some of which had not been released before and/or were more obscure picks, with a community of like minded people was an exciting prospect for me. Now the only reason I know about the issues that were had during this release (printing errors, damaged or delayed releases, the facebook page melt-down) was because of this thread. Seeing all these issues I decided to completely step back from the next releases unless it was something that REALLY caught my attention.

Im in the same boat as @Mather when it comes to the unknown aspect of the box sets. I have bought into a few box sets over the years and each time I evaluated every part of the content financially to see if it was worth it to me. One easy example is the 'John Coltrane in Mono' box set which I bought at a discounted rate when @Mr Moore shared it (I believe I ended up paying Ā£90 total for the 6LP - 1 7" - booklet set). Now I believe at that point I already had the first mono pressings of Giant Steps and My Favorite Things (which were of the same or better audio quality as those in the box), so I factored that into the price and automatically took them out of the equation in my head - i.e. I was paying the Ā£90 for 5lp's rather than the 6LPs+1 7". Had I of picked up the VMP Blue Note box and it turned out I already had 2 out of the 6 releases I would have been really annoyed as it would have meant I paid more per record.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to STAX but im really intrigued, so in theory this box set set should be right up my street. I feel more than happy paying the approx Ā£26 for an AAA pressing of an album as that tends to be around the average here in the UK, but do I feel comfortable paying that much for a mystery record from a label I am not familiar with.....no. If there was a 'spoiler' option to have the list sent to me, I would have done this and quickly read up on a few of them to see what I thought, which could of convinced me to cough up the cash. I MIGHT have been persuaded if the other releases had rave reviews, but from what I have seen here that is unfortunately not the case. At this point I am likely to follow the thread here and see what records appear with each episode, and pick up a copy of each myself elsewhere.

EDIT: Just checked and I paid Ā£68.54 for that box set.....damnnnnn that was a good deal

I am definitely nervous about buying into this one without having much of an idea about what is in it. I may regret this reasoning 2 months from now, but I tend to have faith in passion projects, and I know this Anthology is Storf's baby. It also helps that I know I won't be getting any duplicates and I like what I have heard listening to TCell's guesses.

Yeah this is pretty much how I feel, too. Storf probably cares too much about what people are going to think about this box for it to be a total disaster. I also have a total of 1 Stax record, so I'm not concerned about duplicates, but the duplicates thing is a real concern.

That said, I doubt I'll be down for very many more boxes unless they're jazz. And I'll have to think hard about that duplicates issue, since my jazz collection is growing pretty quickly. The ghostly was a huge letdown and with all the issues VMP is having, I just don't trust them to crank out decent anthologies at a fast clip.

The only one that sticks out as being tacked on was Ghostly. Which it probably was. I could very easily see Ghostly saying to VMP that they'd like to partner up on a box set. Ghostly is the only one where there wasn't an exclusivity other than the colors and box itself. It's always interesting all these additional motivations people assign to VMP on here.

And the 12 in the next 12 months is a want to do not a will do. I'm sure if Storf had his way, it would be so but it's obviously not realistic. Especially not with all the issues the company is having right now. Stax is announced now but won't come out until January. The next one will be announced in February but won't come out till some time in March. Unless they have these completely in the pipeline, ready to go, they won't do more than probably 6 a year. This is all pure speculation on my part. VMP has always had project ideas that never came to fruition like Crate Digger Me, Please and Country Me Please. I think we'll see Anthologies that were some of these ideas.
These have been done pretty far in advance and Iā€™m sure they have quite a few ready to go. Storf wore a Stax and a Ghostly hat in previous unboxing and AMA vids from previous anthologies. Iā€™m guessing they already know their next few and are in production on them.

This is not good news... two of the albums I received sound like they're covered in cotton, and there's been no response from CS for about two weeks regarding the replacements I requested.
I'm still waiting for a replacement album to complete my Blue Note Anthology, it's been almost four months and 30+ emails back and forth. Fingers crossed everyone posting about problems here gets sorted soon.

I think I figured out what the records in the Stax box will be. I think this is pretty similar to the one others have posted, but I believe the Otis Redding is set in stone.

Booker T - Soul Dressing
Sam + Dave - Hold On I'm Coming
Otis Redding - The Soul Album
Bar-Kays - Soul Finger
Eddie Floyd - Never Found A Girl
Johnnie Taylor - Raw Blues
Albert King - Lovejoy
William Bell - Phases of Reality

The chronology and lack of recent reissues fits all of them. Personally I will be very happy if this is it.

From todays standard:
Take from a satisfied Anthology fan: "It's a vinyl boxed set but unfolds over time with bonus content to immerse yourself in a label, genre or artist,ā€ William M. explained

Iā€™ll also be very happy if these are the albums in the Stax Anthology; xmas is coming in January this year, as far as Iā€™m concerned. :-)
