Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Im listening to this Stax podcast and, while I shouldn't really complain as I didn't buy the boxset, its so difficult to get through. Who is it that's doing the talking? I don't want to sound too offensive here but it sounds like he's reading a script out loud for the first time, The anecdotal chat at the beginning is super cringe as well, '"Hey man" he said. "Hey man, whats up" I replied.'

I wouldn't usually comment on stuff like this, but when its part of an exclusive and costly package surely they should have someone that does this for a living?

Its Storf - the guy who has curated this Anthology, chosen many of the exclusive VMP titles also writes many of the booklets for the Classics releases - who is hosting the podcast for this Stax box-set; it’s his pet project.

A lot of people aren’t keen on his opening monologue or interviewing skills (or lack thereof). I quite enjoyed listening to the anecdotes from Steve Cropper etc, though.

I just received my shipping notification for the set & am wondering how long it will take to reach me in England; hopefully in time for the unboxing video & podcast for the first two records.

Ah...say no more.

I agree, the chat with the guests is really good and much better than the intro. It just nags at me how monotonous his tone is throughout, even when he mentions being the biggest Stax fan it sounds like hes reading a eulogy.

Ha ha. Yes, the opening monologue wasn’t the best, but if he’s curated a decent box-set then I’ll forgive him.

It just reeks of this whole VMP ‘vibe’ of trying to communicate with their customers as if we’re all ‘bro’s’. It’s difficult to take seriously.

However, as long as the interviews & general knowledge provided throughout the podcasts is informative & interesting, I won’t be demanding Storfs head on a stick; it seems I’d be at the tail end of a very long queue of people if I did!

Yeah the whole 'bro' thing rubs me the wrong way as well.

Same here, its actually a good podcast once you get to the chat bit, those guests have a ton of knowledge to share.

I just don’t care for Storf’s anecdotes. No one bought this set because of Storf’s life. He spends a good 5 minutes regaling us about how he went to the library to make tapes of soul music, about his Stax tattoos, how he likes soul music etc. Honestly, that’s great, good for him, but that’s 5 minutes wasted that could have been 5 more minutes of Stax info for an introductory podcast.

The little tidbit about how Booker T and the MGs got their name was far more valuable and interesting than Storf’s life story and that anecdote was for like a minute. An introductory podcast about Stax should be about Stax, not Storf’s library visits as a kid in Wisconsin or his tattoos. Please spare us!

It's not even a good story! He discovered Stax, listened to them, and decided to liked the music. Great story, Storf. You should make a podcast and include that amazing anecdote and going to a museum!

If for some reason someone is looking for a Motown set, I saw one for sale today at Amoeba Hollywood.
Still waiting for a complete Blue Note Anthology set here! 😁 We've had 40 emails back and forth since August and I now know my replacement album will never arrive. VMP eventually advising after six months that we "move forward with another title, or a whole bundle of store credits" but I'm thinking that maybe a part-refund is best. Sadly, nothing is happening quickly as they take so long to reply!

I'd CC Matt Fielder and blow them up on twitter and possibly file a chargeback

This is outrageous!

As someone who’s never listened to the podcasts, but has read plenty of Storf’s posts on the forums and write-ups in the listening notes booklets, I’m not surprised that he spends quite a bit of time talking about himself rather than actual musicians, albums, or relevant history. He seems to be trying to cultivate a public persona as a tastemaker for millennials, rather than a dude who writes hastily scribbled, error-laden blurbs for an online retailer riddled with fulfillment issues. The constant bragging and name-dropping is really off-putting, so his involvement in the anthologies is a deterrent, rather than a selling point for me.

Agreed. I kinda thought a lot of the Storf hate was overblown and a little weird... and I still do, but man, he doesn't do himself any favors.

I thought it was New York but it appears to be from New Jersey. My box had some movement today. It went from pre-shipment to at the Jersey City postal distribution center today. So I guess they're on their way. This info was on USPS Informed Delivery.

I’ve had something from “Smithtown, NY” on Informed Delivery, waiting to leave the origin for a while. Is that not it?
