Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Yeah, if this came out before the reissues, I would have been all over it!
But now it's looking like I'll probably have solid versions of what I want by the time it drops.

Here's hoping price point, extras and the rest of the titles make a swing in the other direction - though, in that case I'd rather know sooner so I'm not buying albums twice!

I have the same view about it. Interesting/strange that they would go for albums that will be widely available at the time of release.

Especially considering the high likelihood that the Impulse reissue series is likely to be of a really decent quality.

Makes me wonder if the plan was to get it out before the reissue series, similar to their tactic of 'limited exclusivity' on a lot of their store releases.

8 Albums are confirmed for the Impulse! box covering 1961-1967. AAA where available and using the highest quality masters where not. They are using their own pressing plant in Denver overseen by Gary Salstrom.

To be released mid-2023

1961
1963
1964
1964
1965
Mel Brown - Chicken Fat
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
Alice Coltrane - Ptah the El Daoud

Edit: sorry all, heres the link I forgot - The Story of Impulse! Records
Africa brass is confirmed to be 1961, alice the tape is so destroyed it has to be digital.

One other is only partially AAA

Yeah the new Ptah is Ryan K Smith and getting good Discogs reviews (and a good review from the in groove guy) - pretty weird that VMP isn't listing a mastering engineer in their hype materials. Looking like I can save some money on this.

Very interesting that the three confirmed are getting released this month. Given that Verve/Impulse are doing audiophile releases of some stuff, but did what seems like high quality audiophile digital releases for others (Ptah, Chicken Fat), I’d be curious about the state of those tapes.
Which is probably why they are teasing those now so we don't already have 3 and decide we don't need the set.

I mean there is no way AP isn’t doing Africa/Brass at some point. I just don’t see a reason to grab this. Blue note hadn’t figured out the whole audiophile thing when that one came out. Plus they are stupid priced. I’m glad to save money and have decent copies of what I want.

Don't count on Africa/Brass from AP. Their run of Verve/Impulse is nearly at an end, horrible delays at every point, and no new titles announced. It would not surprise me if AP is done on this one.

The Speakers Corner is superb anyways.

This VMP Impulse box is looking more and more like a stillborn baby. Ptah is digital, so is the new one, and RKS is no slouch - can't see it getting any better. Mel Brown is a minor title anyways, the RKS Karma will be more than sufficient, the Lateef title they chose is ok but probably the bottom tier record he did for Impulse, El Chico is a great record but the SC may have been the last use of the tape before it went up in smoke...nothing for me in the VMP box.

Maybe that's ok too.
