Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Anyway, I've been complaining even before that, that VMP's copy is always going to be the thing that does them in. They word things so ambiguously that they leave themselves open to getting nailed left right and centre.
Perfect example last week when they're advertising an "exclusive" you can't buy "anywhere else". Well, what happens in the off chance it IS available elsewhere for much cheaper and you've already overpaid? You get a ton of angry emails to CS, that's what.

If you are interested in Vanguard, there are plenty of options on the secondary market to get it far under even the $160. I’ve seen it multiple times for $120ish.

I was one of the lucky ones who could swap for this Anthology and I have received the box already. I was asking in anticipation to next BF sales as there are a few Anthologies I could grab.

Try living outside the US. Add the $20 shipping (which is reasonable) and the duties that we get hit with now VMP has changed their shipping method. The Cadet box ended up being well over $500CDN by the time it landed on my front steps.

At least the Impulse one is so anti-climatic I am not interested at all. At this point I cannot imagine a box set that VMP could put together that I would be interested in to make the cost worth it.
I got hit hard with import fees for the Tribe set I got so unless its a swap/reduced I doubt I will be getting another. Shame as the Herbie and Tribe are fantastic sets.

Yea that wording is annoying but outside of something like universal keeping copies of something for themselves without telling VMP, their stuff is usually exclusive. Or sold by Vinceron haha

Most anticlimactic would be accurate. They reap both the rewards and the pitfalls of their FOMO mechanisms. .

The real problem as u said elsewhere is that we are currently drowning in excess (and expensive) vinyl options. And, a lot of quality great jazz reissues specifically. It seems like everyday something new is announced and I find myself wishing I would have known it was coming as I would have waited on a vinyl I bought last week to keep costs under control. FOMO in reverse. :-).

It’s really bumming me out that Archie Shepp is not in this anthology. Impulse might be the house that Trane built, but Shepp poured the cement!

No offense to fans of Mel Brown and Lorez Alexandria, but you’re telling me they have a place in this set over Shepp? That’s nuts.

they put The Cry of My People outside of the set as one of the spiritual jazz companion pieces. But overall I agree.

i also understand that they are at the mercy of the labels with licensing. so it's very possible they wanted a Shepp title but couldn't get tapes/high-res files or licenses...definitely the biggest bummer of the set for me though.

Yeah, agreed, you definitely can't tell the story of Impulse without Shepp.

I can kind of see having Brown and Alexandria because they help show some the label's diversity of style, but yeah, no one would hugely disappointed if Shepp was in instead.

Also, I love both guys, but maybe they didn't need a Chico record and a Szabo record (especially since Tyner and Elvin don't get a record as leader). They could have covered both guys pretty well with Spellbinder or Man from Two Worlds (or just stick with the Chico record they picked).

I do think that VMP has branding and copywriting issues quite often. Calling the anthologies "The Story of" is just bad titling because the responses to titles are always "how can you tell the story of this label or artist without this title/artist?" Calling their main track "Essentials" leads to people saying "this isn't an essential album". etc. The slogan "Lost Sounds Found" is also pretty bad since they hardly do those types of titles and historically, when they DO, they sell really poorly.
