Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Vince Staples vinyl strategy I have to say has been baffling to say the least.

BFT on picture disc.
Summertime 06 split in two releases.

EDIT: Can't tell you how disappointing it was to order "Summertime 06" and find out it was the second one - managed to just snag a copy of the first one used a few weeks back.

His Netflix show is pretty good so far though.
I've been meaning to check out his show. Was surprised to hear that they renewed it for another season.

Curious what that really means because limited and vmp haven't been real in years
The gist I get is that they wanna make anthologies more limited and no represses. I’m betting the GD and BN box represses are not selling well. And they sit on stock of others taking up space in warehouse that eventually go to swaps.

Seems they also wanna incentivize people ordering up front (either cheaper price or some kinda bonus).

If you've watched and enjoyed Atlanta you'll likely like this one, less of an ensemble cast though and mostly Vince focused.

There was a criminally low number of episodes though, think Netflix was testing the waters on this one.

Until they make one that sells well and then they'll repress it again like zamrock. I like the product but I no longer trust vmp when they say something is limited.

So no LL, I guess that means PE or the Beasties? I find it a little odd you're telling the story of Def Jam and not including at least one of those artists! I mean they could always just give the people what they really want and include Oran "Juice" Jones!

I'm also looking forward to a State Property ROTM!

After revolutionizing the boxset game by making them cost way more than the single records, we realized fomo was our only product all along.

Their new slogan should be “FOMO!”
I mean, you're not wrong. FOMO sells. The problem with many of the anthos was they didn't sell well with 1,000 pressed, and then there were constant 40% off sales and they kept putting anthologies in swaps. the overwhelming reaction to announcements has been "I'll wait for it to be in swaps or 40% off".

edit: oh and the curation and stupid “the story of” branding

The story of made sense when it included a podcast deep dive

VMP's eyes got big when someone did the math on these box sets. GD repress is 7,500 units at a minimum $429. A quick $3 mil overnight if they sold out fast. Even at 40% off the entire stock they pull in just under $2 million in revenue. They're not taking a loss on these, but it looks bad when your $400 dollar box set is sitting in a warehouse and the FOMO for it has died off.

I think the Def Jam box is going to tell the story(lol) very clearly. It's going to be more limited (confirmed 750 pressings) and Storf claims it's not getting a repress. If this holds true and the curation is solid enough, I'll bet it sells pretty fast. That should lead to a change in direction with the Antho's, IMO.

Well they don’t have any Dead anthos sitting in a warehouse right now because they don’t have them pressed 😂. But I get the point. Its the same as Chad pressing 30,000 UHQRs of Aja.

That raises an interesting question. Had they had their own plant could they have essentially made dead anthologies 50 at a time when needed as they slowly sold?

Hardly any of the anthologies have been comprehensive “story of” though. BN didn’t have the most important BN albums in it because Don Was only gave them 12 titles to license and they got to choose 6. Same with most of the other label anthologies. Impulse had some heavy hitters when it was announced/leaked but all those have been reissued now. But still not the story of impulse records.

With Def Jam gonna be interesting to see what the picks are but I’m guessing left field stuff that they were allowed to do. I sorta get (licensing aside) not doing Jay Z, beasties, etc because everything has probably already been said about most of those albums.
