Vinyl Me Please Classics

Some of them predate the not repressing track releases, otherwise, I think he meant that sometimes things go out of stock until there is an inventory reconciliation/people canceling orders and then come back

Oh.... yeah... after re-reading the comment you're definitely right.

In the end I opted for Sorcerer. Darrell Banks was my initial swaption but I decided to get some Miles in my collection and grab Banks next month since it looks like the stock on it is fairly healthy.

As a side note.....I added the VMP Byrd in a really great deal from the vinyl deals thread for anyone looking to fill in their classics collection, I'd suggest heading over to the deals thread and checking it out.

Probably gonna swap SRT for something else. I gave it a few listens and I don't think it would ever be a record that I would play much.

Considering Sorcerer, Darrell Banks, or Fancy Free but I'm open to suggestions.

I don’t have the VMP pressing but Fancy Free is a fantastic album (far superior to Stepping Into Tomorrow IMO). I also like it much better than Sorcerer.

Edit: NVM, sounds like you got Byrd elsewhere. Sorcerer is fine, but there are like 15-20 better Miles Davis albums, so hopefully that’s just a start for you.

That's funny, cause I've listened to a lot, and I rather like Sorcerer. But, I like most of his later stuff better anyway.

I
I already know this opinion isn't welcome, after getting virtually yelled at a few years ago when I argued against the idea of VMP doing any Christmas exclusives/having a Christmas-focused December store, but... I'll be Incredibly disappointed if that's the artist & album. I'm well-aware of her being an early influence on R&R, and if she'd ever done an album of just blues, I'd be more okay with that.

I'm a Classics completionist, and have all of them to this point, but I really have no use/interest for any gospel. While I'm more accepting of instrumental Classical music that goes in this direction (e.g., *not* Handel's Messiah), I really, don't want any overt Christian music. They're already the dominant religion & dominate politics to an unwelcome degree. They can fuck right off getting exposure this way, too.
I'm sure it's welcomed, I just don't get the stance. If you don't like it, don't get it.

The need to be opposed to it seems a bit much. I've collected all kinds of music that I disagree with from a world view perspective. It's still good art, even If I don't like the message much. If it's too out there for me I just don't buy it.

If you'd rather sell it instead of swapping, I'm looking to buy Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
I might be interested in this deal. Was thinking about trading for Fancy Free or the Nils Frahm on my last classic. Or maybe you have something you would swap me for the SRT?

Like I said, I haven’t decided yet - but I only have a few hours left. PM me if you want to discuss.

If the whole forum incident had not happened, I would most likely be picking this up. But after listening to it a few times, and enjoying it, I don’t see it as something I absolutely need. Especially when I’m beginning to run out of space.

Didn’t think the lack of guess threads would kill my hype for upcoming releases, but it really has. VMP really fucked up by axing the forum.

This VMP article describes a few albums as boogaloo. But I'm not sure what their track record is on issuing ROTMs they have previously written about in best-of guides.

The Soul Sauce album TCell linked above is mentioned here though, along with Ray Barretto - La Cuna and Willie Bobo - Bobo Motion.
Yeah, I think this is said to have boogaloo mixed in. Don't know if that's enough of a clue, but I think its on the nose as it's in the article here. Maybe should be the front runner?

After reading Storf's clues on reddit I don't think it fits (if we are still talking about Soul Sauce). He said that 2 of 3 albums this month are by artists from Latin America and Cal Tjader is from the US.

Spaces is the album I have spun the most over the past 4+years from VMP by a mile. If you don’t get it now just make sure you do at some point in the future. It is a fist pump wrapped in a high five and sealed by a chefs kiss.

Cal Tjader gets a mention there. Hes pretty damn amazing and a recent 'discovery' of mine. I picked up some rare records of his at a carboot/flea-market the other week then managed to get a test press of an early compilation as well. Really great stuff and would definitely fit into the Latin Jazz category.

Yeah I don't think either applies. I clarified on reddit and was told "from Latin America" is literal. Both these guys I believe are first generation US as is the case with a bunch of guys since the art form is born out of that Bronx Latin immigrant crowd.

That said, I agree when I listened to that album I was impressed. He's become an icon for the genre and has had a resurgence in NY recently too.
