Yeah, I just got my email finally. The way they just casually play it off, if I wasn't aware that plenty of people already got them, I'd think the delay affected everyone.

I bet after they realized a lot didn't ship yet, they just made the executive decision to save money on shipping and put it in peoples' next box.
 
Who knows any more. This was my only record this month, which I wonder if it something to do with that since it was supposedly a glitch where a bunch of peoples orders didn't ship out as normal.

My main issue is that I regularly see most of the releases this year in my stores used bins, in great shape, for $10 or under. Mr. Hands isn't even a top 10 Herbie album (despite it being a solid album still). I personally preferred when the curation at VMP was albums that weren't super easy to find and were in need of a reissue, or when they were things I had never heard of. I personally don't need to drop $27+ on a remaster of an album that I wouldn't have purchased at my local for $10...I'm glad some people are enjoying them and glad you're digging them!

Literally requested Blackstone Legacy from Storf in May. He said he would add it to his whiteboard, but they have most of Classics mapped out until mid-2021.

FWIW, I have gone waaaaay down the rabbit hole on Shaw, who carried lots of mid to late 60s Blue Note albums with his trumpet playing. Really love him on Larry Young’s Unity. Blackstone Legacy is his masterpiece debut album; it's a political statement and an album that is at the centre of a Venn diagram of Post-Bop, Avant-Garde and Fusion. So good. It definitely is super high on my wishlist too.

Yeah it’s crazy how underrated he is. I’d say he might be top 5 trumpet for me. Arguably never made a bad album and has made a few classics of his own. And yes as a house player for Blue Note he is the highlight on a handful of mid to late 60’s releases.
 
I just spent a bit of time looking into the Archive of Contemporary Music. They have the worlds largest collection of popular music (they get over half a million records sent to them each year) and archive/preserve each one, no matter how many copies they already have. They also add the name of the benefactor to each listing which is a really nice touch.

What stood out to me is that they offer an incredibly high res scan service of any record/cd/cassette/etc that they have in their collection at just $50 per scan. Big labels will go to these guys when reissuing records as the chances are that they will have a near mint copy (or at least one which is in the highest condition available) which ensures the closest reissue of a cover. Just think how cheap that is to a label whilst ensuring that the highest quality is met.......VMP should certainly look into this company.

This. Totally this. Patrice Rushden and Bar-Keys would have been a case of having an LP for an LP's sake. It's doubtful I'll ever listen to them again on a streaming service let alone vinyl so the £20 would have been wasted or would have taken up limited space that something I really want could go into. Maybe classics has become a less appropriate name over time as just because something is pre-90's that doesn't make it classic. it just makes it older.

I feel like I'm being a bit disrespectful to artists here but maybe if classics hadn't started with such a high bar, so for example this Bar-Keys lp was 2nd or 3rd out of the gate, then it would appear more acceptable but in the early days Classics was blowing away the main sub. Now it seems just as hitty missy... and two from the last 3 have been a miss.

So Bar-Kays was a miss for you, but which other record was a miss? The Albert King?

I think the Tyner McCoy and Albert King were definite hits. I can understand The Bar-Kays being a miss, but both the records from Albert King & Tyner Mcoy, are spectacular records!

Argh! no King is mega. Patrice Rushden wasn't really my bag.

I guess for me the question is that if they put 2000 copies in the store would it sell straight out or would there still be a ton weeks and weeks later. The early stuff, i'm sure, would have been out of stock within minutes of going up

mmmm yeah, I feel like a lot of people were disappointed in the Patrice Rushen choice! It's definitely the Classics pick that stands out the most for having a contemporary funk sound! 🍭

I love Patrice Rushen's Straight From The Heart! 'Forget Me Nots' is a killer track, with an amazing groovy fat baseline! it's a sleek, infectious post-disco song and Patrice's dreamy vocals just glide and melt so perfectly into the mix. The centrepiece of the record in my opinion is 'Remind Me', a track that's been sampled hundreds of times! One of the best R&B songs of the 80's for sure! Side A of Straight From the Heart is like that Sunset, tropical, beach-like, funky music! It's perfection! Side B is very diverse! You have that closing track which is like a chilled, acoustic-like cuban song, 'Breakout', a gospel-like funky song, 'Remind Me', a juicy, groovy, relaxed song and 'Where Is The Love', a luxurious, smooth quiet-storm number! 🏝🍹

I think Patrice Rushen's Straight From The Heart was an excellent pick, and the pressing sounds absolutely incredible! I think a lot of people don't like it because it's a progressive R&B/post-disco kinda album from the 80's. But if you actually purchase the vinyl and spin it, I'm sure you'll be grooving and will cherish it! ❤

I think you’re right about that and it’s not a bad way to look at it. I think Patrice would still be in the store if they pressed 2000-3000. Tyner is rad and deserved a reissue IMO.

Yeah, I think Patrice Rushen would still be in store if the pressed 2,000 copies! It's not one that really sits with the target audience as much. Like I can't imagine that funky West-Ends Records kinda sound being popular amongst VMP subscribers.

A lot of people didn’t want the pick because they have seen it in their local record stores for $10 and under and didn’t buy it at that price. The music on the album is fine. Not my favorite but not the worst either. I like r&b and disco and 80s music. It was just such an uninspired pick for me. Nothing about it says “classic” or made me want to spend $27 on it. I’m glad you and others enjoyed it though!
 
Everyone just listen to the organically groovy, seductive, alluring, jazzy R&B cut 'Remind Me' by Patrice Rushen! It's a turntable classic! It's song that is meant to be played on the turntable 100%! It's one of the best song to even be on a Classics ROTM in my opinion, that's how good it is! Like it's on par with the track 'Attica Blues' by Archie Shepp! 💎

I'm glad it got the super high-quality pressing treatment because Forget Me Nots & Remind Me are turntable classics. Like hearing those two songs at such great quality is priceless! This really is a great Classics pick, it's just not being sold properly to the VMP subscribers!
