Vinyl Me Please Classics

Well he succeeded with Money Talks for me lol. It actually feels really nice to get out of the Classics completionist mindset. Now I wanna see how long I can go before I get sucked back in.

It’s not difficult. I’ve been concentrating on my Discogs want list, along with other albums that never made the list.

Plus Storf has weird/odd taste in music. He seems to think that on the seventh day God created Stax. And Stax has some good stuff, but they were no Atlantic.

I believe they said no more Stax for the rest of the year!

Interesting follow-up from Pauly this morning on delayed Classics shipments. We don't need to know all the nuts & bolts of their business, but info like this in advance would have lessened my frustration -

This title was supposed to ship out on time, but due to Covid restraints, we are now having to assemble these records ourselves (which we never had to do before, they would arrive ready to ship). This caused the stock of that title to slow down when it came to shipping it out of the door.
When folks got replacements before you, I am really not sure what happened there, but I am not sure how it happened.
Not trying to be vague, but that is the situation as I understand it.

They seem to have just postponed them all until the August record ships though, for people with subscriptions, which is a money saver for them. If they wanted to accept responsibility and put the customer first, they would have shipped them ASAP.

Is this just for Sahara I assume?

Yeah it's the same thing with De Stijl, even as all the other Canadian members were receiving theirs and I've got nothing I'm being told they are shipping out throughout July. I mean clearly they aren't at this point so I ask again and hear the same thing, so finally I ask a third time and am told that there's a repress and my copy hasn't been manufactured yet. JUST TELL ME THAT AT THE BEGINNING FFS. Honestly I understand delays during a worldwide pandemic, I get it. But don't lie to me. I mean I might not be the smartest guy but I can generally count days in the month, how did you think the whole "shipping throughout July" lie was gunna go when they literally haven't even manufactured the discs yet?

I am a little surprised about the general dislike this forum has for the Bar Kays pick. It sounds like a fun funk album I otherwise wouldn't have given a chance, and I'm sure the AAA mastering will be top notch like the whole Stax Anthology was.

It may not be on the level of Otis Redding or Al Green, but to my ears its worth owning and far more 'Classic' than the Errol Garner and Albert King picks. Obviously Holy Ghost is the key selling point, however the other tracks are nothing to snuff at either. Just listened to it again this morning and it has me really looking forward to my box whenever it arrives, with or without BVSC...since apparently that's something I need to worry about now. Sigh.

Should we be expecting similar drama for next month with Spiritualized? It seems every essentials lately has had issues except for John Mayer, because that album will probably be sitting in swaps for the next few years.

I'm down for the Bar Kay's simply because I don't have a massive funk collection and while I know there are many more albums that should be in front of this one in terms of must haves, a lot of it comes down to quality. How many AAA mastered reissues are there of classic funk albums? From what I've seen not many. I've got Funk Inc from the Jazz Dispensary series mastered by KG and pressed at QRP and that thing SINGS on my rig. I'll take the trade off on this Bar Kay's when it comes to not being an essential album, but still being a fun one... and one that might be a show piece album for my system. If this is the same level of mastering quality as the usual classics releases then I think Holy Ghost will be astonishing coming through my speakers, and that's enough for me.

The amount of bullshit they spin. This maybe true or might be more crap. At this point I am expecting them to say they have to go out and cut down the trees so they can make the pulp to make the shipping boxes.

You're right about there not being a lot of great reissues, but that's why this pick was such a let down for me. Wish they would have done something worth it. If I really want holy ghost, I'd probably grab a 12" single of it.

I think the Baby Huey reissue is AAA. I've heard good things about the Craft Isaac Hayes reissues. I only have Hot Buttered Soul and it's pretty good but I'm not sure about AAA. MoFi Superfly should be good, again not sure of source. It's a shame the ORG There's a Riot Goin' On is out of print, it is pretty great too. Although, I think that highlights an issue that a lot of funk isn't necessarily recorded to the best audiophile standards anyway.

For that reason I'm generally happy with originals, especially when they're cheap.

I really wish some great reissue company could get their hands on some P-Funk releases. They couldn't have lost/damaged all the tapes, could they? That would be a tragedy.

At least there's some good Jazz-Funk reissues. If I'm forgetting any great quality funk reissues I'd love to know.

Could you tell me which Baby Huey ressiue is supposed to be AAA? I would really like to pick that up.
