Vinyl Me Please Classics

New grass is definitely a very polarising album though
It was crazy controversial at the time of release as well. The jazz critics and aficionados called him a sell-out for incorporating R&B, boogaloo, electric rock bass, soul horn sections, backing singers, and the mainstream listeners thought the avant-garde jazz element was just too much. Lose-Lose situation there. To be fair though I think he knew how controversial it would be which is why he reserved his opening track 'Message From Albert/New Grass' for his explanation into these new areas.

Someone on Reddit suggested this month's Classics could be Leon Thomas - The Leon Thomas Album as it is Flying Dutchman Catalogue #: FDS 132. Can't find a connection to Thomas being referred to as a genius, but if this were it, it might give me pause from letting my sub lapse.

Never heard of that album and I highly doubt it’s it but dang! What a lineup! I’ll have to check that out.

I’m starting to think 132 has nothing to do with catalog number or billboard position. Most likely something like 1 artist, 3 things on the cover, 2 of something else or some variation on characteristics like that.

Yea--it's likely similar to what they did for Albert King...I'm guessing the "1" is for solo artist and 32 is number of characters in the album title, etc.

this album is awesome. I always hoped they would have done a Flying Dutchman anthology before the prices got jacked up...I have mentioned it every time they send a survey out haha

In the context of VMP vs "other," after seeing this post I picked up a NM copy off discogs for $16. Will it be NM? Who knows... Will it arrive flat, and soon, and for $16... I have as least as much confidence in the seller (only 324 transactions and 99.4%) as VMP -- which is saying something.

Thats a great deal, I was checking the other day and the cheapest copy in the UK is a VG+ for £23 plus £5 shipping. I hope the Classics pick is this, I was just reading about the Flying Dutchman label in the 'House That Trane Built: The Story Of Impulse! Records'.

I'm excited to read that book -- it's in the stack, but it's a tall stack...

I know the feeling, I have tons to get through! Its a really good book, im certainly enjoying it. Its a lot more approachable than the Blue Note Biography by Richard Cook (if you have read that one?). This Impulse! one has plenty of anecdotes, interviews, and photos. Throughout the narrative of the book are double-paged spreads focusing on specific albums. Really enjoyable read.

Got shipping notice this morning for Sahara (finally), BVSC and Prince Paul. Of course they’re all being shipped out in three separate packages.

This takes care of all of my pending orders with them. I’ve scheduled my cancellation for the end of the month. I’m slightly tempted to resubscribe one last time for Spiritualized... but the thought of hanging around for another three months is giving me anxiety lol.

Yeah I haven’t decided if I’m going to jump in this month or try to buy Spiritualized later on down the road either from the store or secondhand. It’s not an album I need right this second, but I would love to replace my Plain copy. If Classics is amazing, I might be tempted to rejoin with the one month option.

This would be a nice choice. It's not a masterpiece -- Thomas' best work was with Pharoah Sanders -- but it's a solid album.

Money Talks is really sold out?
Probably not. Their Current ROTM subs usually go in and out of being available until the next month is announced. The only way this one would be out of stock (as it did not seem like a supremely inspired selection) would be if they purchased less stock than normal. My guess though would be it will be back in stock shortly just have to keep a look out.
