Vinyl Me Please Classics

I feel like since the clue was "one" of the artists is appearing for the 2nd time with top billing in Classics, and we know that that is Miles Davis, that eliminates Art Blakey and Dave Brubeck, etc. Star People is the only album this quarter from a repeat Classics artist.

Yeah. Sonny Rollins too.

My guesses for Classics would be:

Miles Davis - Star People
Ornette Coleman - Shape of Jazz to Come
Charles Mingus - Mingus
I don’t think self titled Mingus would be it. It would have to be Blues and Roots or Dynasty, right? I think Star People and Shape of Jazz are locks (even though I selfishly want Sun Ra’s Jazz In Silhouette).

I don’t think Shape of Jazz is a lock. Ah Um, Sun Ra, Wes Montgomery are just as likely imo. Sun Ra especially considering Craft is reissuing his the Futuristic Sounds next month.
True. I would be overly happy with Sun Ra for 59and Wes Montgomery’s Incredible Jazz Guitar for 1960, especially since both albums could use audiophile reissues and are two of my favorite jazz albums. I’ve never heard a good copy of Jazz Guitar (always boxy and distant. Have had both mono and stereo issues from the 60’s and the stereo is ever slightly better) and the only copy I have of Jazz in Silhouette is from Waxtime (it’s surprisingly good though).

I figure the "one of the most important jazz albums" clue is one of this bunch from 59-60:

Jazz in Silhouette (makes sense considering Craft is putting out The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra from 1962 in September, AAA/RTI)
The Shape of Jazz to Come (could they do a mono mix since Speakers Corner/Kevin Gray just put out a stereo version?)
The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery (there hasn't been a good reissue of this in decades, I think the master tapes toast, and the 80s OJC sounds really awful)
Mingus Ah Um (Sony isn't giving out this master tape, so no AAA, and they said Classics are gonna be AAA from now on)

and the previous exclusive artists probably refers to Mingus, Monk, or Lateef, which could point to one of these albums:

Yusef Lateef - The Centaur And The Phoenix
Yusef Lateef - Cry! – Tender
Yusef Lateef - The Three Faces of Yusef Lateef
Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
(AP has a 45 RPM reissue coming out soon)
Mingus Ah Um (same comment about Sony and master tapes as above)
Mingus Dynasty (ORG did this recently, so I'm skeptical)
Thelonious Monk - The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall
Thelonious Monk - 5 By Monk By 5
Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Alone In San Francisco
Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Monk at the Blackhawk

My money is on either Yusef Lateef or Thelonious Monk for the past mulitple VMP store exclusive artist, and then either a mono The Shape of Jazz to Come or Sun Ra for "important jazz album"

I think you have to look at it this way. It’s VMP so important jazz album probably only applies to Coleman and Mingus.

Also, VMP isn’t mofi so going to Sony isn’t that big of a deal.

It’s not like mofi isn’t the only people Sony refuses tapes to. Remember when At Folsom Prison was refused to VMP except as a digital file?

And regarding “important jazz albums” this is what Penguin jazz guide sats about Jazz in Silhouette/

Hasn’t VMP gotten access to the Sony vault/tapes before? Maybe it was one of the anthologies I’m thinking of. Though I’m not sure I see Sony allowing a major title out if they didn’t let them get Folsom.

Philly anthology was Sony I believe. But for their massive titles, they hardly seem to let the tapes out of the vault.

They’re not letting anyone take them out. My understanding is you have to go to them. I don’t know the Folsom story so not commenting.

No on really knows what the deal is there, but there are definitely certain titles that are locked in the vault for good like Kind of Blue and all the 60s-70s Miles, At Folsom Prison, and I'm sure Mingus Ah Um, etc. I think its' an artist by artist, title by title thing, not a catch-all

Yeah Jazz In Silhouette is a great album, possibly Ra’s best, but it is not an “important” album in jazz like Shape of Jazz To Come or Incredible Jazz Guitar.

Penguin Jazz Guide says otherwise. Crown status in the Core Collection list, plus being called verbatim "one of the most important jazz records"

VMP Classics always gives us Tough Guys, not Hot Buttered Soul or Shaft. They give us Mr. Hands, not Maiden Voyage or Head Hunters. Aretha Now not Lady Soul or I've Never Loved a Man. If we get an Ornette it won't be a Tier 1 Jazz album that has been reissued to death.

True. But that is just some guy writing that it should be considered one of the most important jazz records 40 years removed from the release. I don’t disagree. But in the grand scheme of jazz albums, it’s not nearly as important as the other albums mentioned. It’s a fantastic album, but Shape of Jazz To Come was instantly an important album and shifted the landscape of jazz for the next decade plus. Incredible Jazz Guitar set the benchmark for jazz guitar and all the imitators that followed. Jazz In Silhouette is an important album but didn’t shift the landscape of jazz or inspire legions of imitators.
