How is this worse than all the white dudes that "appropriated" rock n roll and blues rock? Or reggae, like Elvis Costello or The Clash? Or something like raga rock.I didn’t notice the specials in there, I’ll give a pass on them, they’re great. There’s a whole lot of ska-punk in there, everything you said after two tone is ska-punk scenes, not genres and it’s not pedantic to insist that “fun“, largely white, music doesn’t appropriate the name of a 60s Jamaican scene.
Also a VMP member since 2014 who was proudly on Team No Swaps until Jim Sullivan last year (wanted to snag another Classics record before it went away) and I've got to say, even though I was fully intending to go back to being "No Swap," it's been liberating to be out.Been a member for 5 years, been a proud member of hashtag team no swaps (I’m too old to hashtag). This is going to be my first swap. I’ve got my Fiona apples from them, they need to impress me from now on to get more money from me.
but its much more political than you rememberAlso a VMP member since 2014 who was proudly on Team No Swaps until Jim Sullivan last year (wanted to snag another Classics record before it went away) and I've got to say, even though I was fully intending to go back to being "No Swap," it's been liberating to be out.
i think the reason most people get angry about it being cancel culture or something is because liking bad people = bad person in very simplistic lizard brain thoughts and liking the music of someone you know is bad and you should not give money makes them feel bad so they defend feel like they have to defend the actionstop saying how you're against cancel culture. You don't even know what that means. So you're saying Mayer was "cancelled". He's makin money deals with VMP. He seems to be doing just fine.
But please. Someone think of his feelings when people point out the shit things he's done.

There's good ska punk and shit ska punk. Sure, even the good is not for everybody, like literally any music, but writing off an entire sub-genre like it's objectively shit is dumb. Acting like appropriating a certain type of rhythm/use of horns (and their namesake) and loosely fusing it with punk is worse than any other type of modern rock appropriation is confusing.
yeah, there’s a significant difference between saying someone should lose their livelihood and saying maybe their particular voice shouldn’t be the one singled out for amplification at a time when VMP has publicly committed to soul-searching and doing better by the black community that they‘ve made a good chunk of their profits from. It’s really not difficult to find black artists in the music industry to work with, or at least an artist that didn’t voluntarily go on the record calling themselves a white supremacist and using the n-word. There are a staggering number of artists who have never done those things - not just in the last ten years, but like, EVER. Whether or not people have chosen to overlook that fact or feel like he’s changed, he’s certainly not emblematic [even on his best days] of the values VMP has said that they want to build into their corporate structure and mission or whatever they’re calling it.
Whether or not someone likes his music or wants to buy the record is a separate issue. They can buy it right now for $25 at Target, so there’s no need for VMP to get involved in helping him to sell records by tellIng people that they need this in their collection.
I think I'm going to grab this John Mayer Essentials pick. I really do enjoy around 5 tracks on Continuum and I think this album will be great as a listening experience, and will further help enrich and broaden my musical taste! I haven't really got many pop-rock/soft-rock albums on vinyl at all and this is an album I do generally like. I think spinning Continuum will be great in terms of sound. Continuum is an album I know I would enjoy a bit more from hearing a very good pressing, as some of the tracks are beautifully layered and others some really nice, more stripped back instrumentation. I'm definitely keen for this John Mayer ROTM. Again, I understand why a lot of people think this is the worst Essentials ROTM pick so far. Understand that people find John Mayer's music bland too, and I generally do, but thankfully VMP chose what I think is John Mayer's best album - an album that has some real gems on there! Personally, there's around 10 Essential picks I like less than Continuum, but it definitely isn't in the top half Essential ROTM picks!Hard not to chip in on this one too...
I couldn’t name or recall a John Meyer tune and I may never, not a VMP member anymore and wont be getting this record.
Is he a bad person..... We have a few snippets from his LIFE written on the internet. My quick google has suggested he apologised for the racist crap he spewed in interviews and freely admits he was up his own arse at the time (badly attempting some sort of crazy persona in a FJM manner perhaps) The excuse is plausible but who the fuck knows.
Then we moved on to Domestic Violence after another google - again that looks very complicated and I wont comment on it.
Is John Meyer a complete tool - I don’t think anyone on this forum actually knows. But I think we can say for many the pick has not been inspiring.
VMP choose their albums months in advance, certainly before the BLM movement and they have either decided not to change date on this or couldn’t for contractual reasons. Instead they put out that recent statement as a precursor to the backlash.
But if you really like this album just get it and don’t feel guilty - also feel free to say so, I certainly won’t judge you.
Also
I am a little sad it wasn’t Dylan.
But I think a lot of people will join for this John Mayer pick too! And if not, I'm sure people will just sign up for either the August or September ROTM's! Would be sweet if VMP have that promotion though so more people can afford to join in on the fun!A lot of 3 for 2 month subscriptions will cancel today with the John Mayer announcement I think. I can see another 3 for 2 making an appearance later this month.

Who knows, maybe will we get Prince's Love Symbol!Maybe you’re right and this will sell out. In which case the predictions for Bone Machine are against what world for the company. The 90s albums will be Simply Red - Stars and Hootie & The Blowfish - Cracked Rear View. Both of which are fine btw but nothing to set my pulse racing
