Yeah they’re totally cancelled
Who knows, maybe will we get Prince's Love Symbol!
I hope VMP chooses an album you really want, so then you sign back up! What was the last ROTM you got from VMP Murfocakes?
I think I'm going to grab this John Mayer Essentials pick. I really do enjoy around 5 tracks on Continuum and I think this album will be great as a listening experience, and will further help enrich and broaden my musical taste! I haven't really got many pop-rock/soft-rock albums on vinyl at all and this is an album I do generally like.
mmmmm, in regards to paying full price, that would depend honestly on what the pressing details for this VMP exclusive are! If Continuum has impressive remastering details and is like 45RPM too, then I guess I might be inclined to pay the full priceOK, but what if you had to pay for it?
It is common to refer to all types of ska as just "ska" and ska punk typically falls under third wave. I don't understand your issue with that or why you mentioned appropriating the name, when the reason the name is used, is because there is an influence of elements from the original ska genre, just like rock and blues to whatever you want to call subgenres of that today.Read what I said fully before replying please.

My point still stands about replying to a post about someone saying they like bands in a genre with "don't call it that, that's not ska, that's ska punk, which is terrible" to paraphrase.
If you want to actually explain what you think I'm misunderstanding instead of being condescending, that would be cool too, as sometimes its hard for me to understand everything perfectly.
I’m glad you’re getting some joy out of it. One aspect of curation is to expose people to styles and artists they might not have thought about liking. If this worked for you, awesome! I think what some commentators have an issue with is that they believe that VMP didn’t really think this is an album of great music that should have a wider vinyl release but was part of a business deal package or just targeted to already-fans of JM to get them to subscribe. As a business decision, that might be the way to go, I dunno, I don’t care. Anyway, to the extent this selection gives you something you like, I’m happy for you!mmmmm, in regards to paying full price, that would depend honestly on what the pressing details for this VMP exclusive are! But yeah, getting this record for free definitely makes it easier to keep! I mean, I could swap it for something else, but I'd rather this John Mayer album than anything in the VMP store I haven't purchased (except for the Whitney Houston boxset)!
Happy that I'll have this John Mayer album and can't to spin the VMP David Gray exclusive, which is on the way to me! They're both a bit challenging listens for me personally but I genuinely do enjoy the music on them both for the most part!
I could never get into the BosstonesAfter this discussion, watch us get Mighty Mighty Bosstones or Brian Setzer Orchestra as one of the best of the 90s and I will hate you all for bringing this ska/swing discussion up and to their attention.
Screaming, literally can't stop laughing at thisThis is harmless background music to play while I'm having brunch with a friend. It's like Des'Ree for white dudes.
Screaming, literally can't stop laughing at this
Life.....oh life.......ooooooooh liiiiife, oh liiiiife.......life - Love that song by Des'Ree even though me and my bestie giggle at that song!
I can't JoeI like how she:
1. sees a ghost
2. tells us that it’s the sight she fears the most
3. but then naw fuck it, I’m going to have some toast
4. and sit down and watch the evening news
Great story!
Sorry, I guess in trying to make sense of why you had a problem with the way that people who are fans of a genre refer to it, I misunderstood you. I'm sorry if you felt that was agressive, that was not my intent. That was literally the first time I had ever seen someone refer to ska-punk as just ska in my entire life, they’re so different musically, and I spent a lot of time around the edges of the genre through friends in the late 90s early 00s.
You spoke about musical appropriation aggressively, defensively at length in response to a post that was talking about nomenclature.

My intent was to encourage you to reconsider going out of your way to tell people they shouldn't refer to a genre they enjoy by the colloquial norm because you think that genre is terrible.
I mean, two tone ska was pretty great, but the stuff that happened in the 90’s... ugh.Don’t you dare feel bad about ska! Reel Big Fish, catch-22, Less Than Jake, Pietasters, Mephiskapholes, mustard plug, the specials, suicide machines, Spring Heeled Jack, Dance Hall Crashers, and so on and so forth all put on really fun shows and/or had good albums! It’s ska, the music so ridiculous, you just gotta be happy!!
Mephiskapheles and Oolooloo by The Pietasters.
The Pietasters are legit good.those
goddamn
band
names
!!!!!!!!
The Bosstones are like the most generic ska band there is (kind of like the intro to the genre). They're not bad, but there were so many more interesting bands out there.I mean, two tone ska was pretty great, but the stuff that happened in the 90’s... ugh.
except the Bosstones, that shit holds up.
Disagree! I think they’re the link between American punk and two tone ska. They wrote good songs that were ska tinged, but without being slavish to the ska sound and the “pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!” silliness. They got shitty at the end when they got a hit, but their first four albums are great. The Bosstones are like the most generic ska band there is (kind of like the intro to the genre).
