Vinyl Me Please Essentials

View attachment 65421

Finally got my LAGWAFIS! I'm sort of a fan of this album. Pictured clockwise from top left are the OG, Plain, Art Vinyl, and VMP pressings.

The VMP is by far the best packaging. Sleeve is thick, heavy gatefold, and that image in the middle is hilarious-- I'm pretty sure those are the original CD blister packs, someone correct me if I'm wrong? I keep meaning to buy one for the novelty of it.

In terms of sound, I thought it was.... fine! About as good as the Art Vinyl pressing, which also has the original choral version of the first track. My copy was a little noisy, which shouldn't be a huge surprise since it was pressed at GZ. I'm actually a bit disappointed by this, since I expected a nice new master would elevate this record, but honestly the AVLP sounds just as good and maybe better. I don't know what sourcing the AVLP people used, or who mastered it, or really much of anything-- it was a hard record to track down. The VMP version is easily better than the Plain and the original though.

Anyway, I'm happy I have this. Like I said, this is easily a top 5 album for me. The VMP packaging is beautiful, I just wish they used a different mastering engineer, or pressed it somewhere better, or something, because it's definitely not as good as it could be. Oh well!
Yes, they appeared to be the original CD blister packs.

I didn’t even know that Art reissue existed haha! I’ve seen it listed on Discogs but have never seen it for sale. Glad it sounds alright. I’m going to assume this will be the best it can sound. Can’t wait to trash my Plain issue.

Outkast, Badu, and Billie Holiday would nab me for 3 months damn. They knew they had to put through the heat to justify that price hike, still doesn't justify it but definitely effective at holding us hostage :[. Excited to see the remaining three tracks, look like Redman's Muddy Waters is a front runner for RHH which would grab me for another track damnit. DAMN YOU VINYL ME PLEASE, YOU BASTARDS

tbh i am pretty sure im falling for a bad case of FOMO

billie holiday seems like she is not for me (im not into vocal jazz) and erykah badu is kinda... weird to me, its alright but i dont get the acclaim as its good but also very repetitive and surreal in a way i dont like... i probably could save a bit by doing 1 month for stankonia and redman and save 20 bucks...

Do what feels right. Fight the FOMO! Which Badu album did you listen to? Baduizm has been one of those defining soundscapes for me and Billie Holiday is my second favorite female vocalist behind Ella Fitzgerald so for me I'm GEEKING. That being said theres no reason you need to spend $43 on an album you have to convince yourself to enjoy. Take that money and get some records that have been on your wishlist!

I dig Badu but they can keep all their vocal Jazz picks.

They will probably have me for Outkast and Billie Holiday. I am probably also in for most of the Classics picks coming up, if not all.

I feel real hypocritical after my outrage at the price hike, but if they keep the heat coming I will keep buying. What the hike really did was deter me from plumbing through the depths of Swaptions. I have everything I would pay $33 for already.

These feelings aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s okay to be pissed at a price hike and still okay to begrudgingly purchase that product or service.

This year has easily been my favourite year in Essentials! I actually have really enjoyed all Essentials picks this year, including Caroline Rose’s Superstar and John Mayer’s Continuum! ✅✅👍

OutKast, Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday is the icing on the cake though! Then 3 Essentials + The Roots, Dirty Projectors, Spiritualized, Buena Vista Social Club, The Stooges, The White Stripes & Stevie Nicks! That is just incredible! ♥♥♥

I love VMP! They are doing so good at the moment with their R&HH ROTM picks too after the disappointing Future and N*E*R*D ROTM picks! Prince Paul, Lord Finesse, Ghostface Killah and now Redman!!!!! 😍🎯

Glad you’re happy, friend. But you are uncharacteristically sub-psyched about the Classics picks in this post! 😜
