I mean Wikipedia even has Bjork, FKA Twigs and Gorillaz in their "List of Trip Hop Artists" so it's pretty common to misapply the label.Yeah, I'd put it in a bucket with Cut Chemist, RJD2, Handsome Boy Modelling School etc...it's not the first time I've heard DJ Shadow referred to as Trip Hop and I've always disagreed with the categorization.
I own noneI only own two of these
I don't know what an FKA Twig is (I'm old ffs). But Bjork is the closest out of the two to Trip Hop and it's still a hard no.I mean Wikipedia even has Bjork, FKA Twigs and Gorillaz in their "List of Trip Hop Artists" so it's pretty common to misapply the label.
It’s weird because I think he kind wears a lot of hats stylistically. It would never have been my first thought but it has that downbeat vibe to it. Like his UNKLE stuff is for sure so maybe his solo stuff should be considered as well.I mean...doesn't DJ Shadow kinda fall under that umbrella too? I don't think I ever considered him Trip Hop.

The 10 Best Trip-Hop Albums To Own On Vinyl
Back in the early ’90s, the seeds of a new strain of music that blended together hip-hop, jazz and electronic influences started to sprout. Tagged trip-hop—a phrase reputedly coined by a writer at Mixmag magazine—the vibe was all about atmospheric (and often instrumental) beats that embraced a...magazine.vinylmeplease.com

Yeah I think maybe some individual songs might fall under the Trip-Hop heading stylistically but I don’t think these would be considered Trip-Hop artists or that any have released Trip-Hop albumsI mean Wikipedia even has Bjork, FKA Twigs and Gorillaz in their "List of Trip Hop Artists" so it's pretty common to misapply the label.

I mean I always heard Morcheeba associated to the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, but I can't really consider them Trip Hop. Their presence on the list would have been more shocking than their absence IMO.And no Morcheeba on that list? I was always told if I like Massive Attack I'd LOVE Morcheeba (which I never actually listened to even though they just dropped a new album).
You sir, have just blown my fucking mind today.
Seriously.
40 years of life. Never once have I put two and two together on the Unkle/DJ Shadow connection. My life I'm afraid will never be the same.
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS!?
Start with Big Calm. A favorite of mine. And no Morcheeba on that list? I was always told if I like Massive Attack I'd LOVE Morcheeba (which I never actually listened to even though they just dropped a new album).
Well, despite being a bit younger and being familiar with both, this is news for me tooYou sir, have just blown my fucking mind today.

We are about the same age. I remember when the album dropped that DJ Shadow was a big part of the hype behind the album. Like James Lavelle ran the Mo Wax label but didn’t have much in the way of musical talent, he was kind of like the DJ Khalid of his time (that’s probably selling him a bit short) in that he had tons of connections due to Mo Wax and brought in all the collaborators to work on UNKLE but it was essentially a DJ Shadow with kick ass guests album. I think Shadow didn’t really dig Jamie kinda getting a lot of credit for the album either and it’s why he only did the production for Psyence Fiction. You sir, have just blown my fucking mind today.

I consider Blue Lines to be way more Trip-Hop than Mezzanine, which veered more towards Electronica, however you're right when you say the term wasn't coined until the mid 1990s by the British music media, which is around the same time Protection was released.I wouldn't really classify Blue Lines as trip hop either, it was a bit before trip hop & doesn't quite fit with the sound, maybe Mezzanine would have been a better pick for this list.
