Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Yeah, I'd put it in a bucket with Cut Chemist, RJD2, Handsome Boy Modelling School etc...it's not the first time I've heard DJ Shadow referred to as Trip Hop and I've always disagreed with the categorization.
I mean Wikipedia even has Bjork, FKA Twigs and Gorillaz in their "List of Trip Hop Artists" so it's pretty common to misapply the label.

I mean...doesn't DJ Shadow kinda fall under that umbrella too? I don't think I ever considered him Trip Hop.
It’s weird because I think he kind wears a lot of hats stylistically. It would never have been my first thought but it has that downbeat vibe to it. Like his UNKLE stuff is for sure so maybe his solo stuff should be considered as well.

Here’s some content for anyone who’s anxious about this thread going off topic…

I've got 6 on CD and 0 on vinyl.

I'd add Morcheeba - Big Calm, Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X, Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain, and Nightmares on Wax - Smoker's Delight as essentials as well, but hard to argue with the 10 they've got.

You sir, have just blown my fucking mind today.

Seriously.

40 years of life. Never once have I put two and two together on the Unkle/DJ Shadow connection. My life I'm afraid will never be the same.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS!?

I don't think Trip Hop is a helpful label, one I've never really used. When a lot of these albums came out there was no such thing as Trip Hop. I think the label only came about to try and classify the stuff being put out on Mo Wax, DJ shadow was definitely part of that, but I would class him as a hip hop DJ and entroducing as a sample based album. You could call it trip hop though.

I wouldn't really classify Blue Lines as trip hop either, it was a bit before trip hop & doesn't quite fit with the sound, maybe Mezzanine would have been a better pick for this list.

And no Morcheeba on that list? I was always told if I like Massive Attack I'd LOVE Morcheeba (which I never actually listened to even though they just dropped a new album).
I mean I always heard Morcheeba associated to the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, but I can't really consider them Trip Hop. Their presence on the list would have been more shocking than their absence IMO.

Only for Psyence Fiction though. He left in the long gap between it and the second and it’s been James Lavelle’s baby with a rotating guest stars since.

We are about the same age. I remember when the album dropped that DJ Shadow was a big part of the hype behind the album. Like James Lavelle ran the Mo Wax label but didn’t have much in the way of musical talent, he was kind of like the DJ Khalid of his time (that’s probably selling him a bit short) in that he had tons of connections due to Mo Wax and brought in all the collaborators to work on UNKLE but it was essentially a DJ Shadow with kick ass guests album. I think Shadow didn’t really dig Jamie kinda getting a lot of credit for the album either and it’s why he only did the production for Psyence Fiction.

I consider Blue Lines to be way more Trip-Hop than Mezzanine, which veered more towards Electronica, however you're right when you say the term wasn't coined until the mid 1990s by the British music media, which is around the same time Protection was released.
