Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Oh hey look...there's music being all subjective and shit.

I'm guessing you're not a big hip hop fan?
From a pure hip hop perspective, I think you can argue the man has 3, maybe 4 top 100 hip hop albums. It's truly a shame that the man and the music are two truly different beasts.

Don’t mind a bit of old school hip hop ..but I’ve never heard anything remotely interesting from the West fella ..I find him musically as dull as dishwater ..

Why are we even talking about this considering I thought we all agreed that VMP wouldn't do Nas because he's too problematic? Like this is a slam dunk here guys.

Kanye is abusive* and racist. There should be no discussion of "will they actually do this"?

EDIT: * We're focusing on all the racism and ignoring the fact that Kanye was showing signs of an abusive partner right from the get around Kim.
Except for the fact that apparently Storf said this week on the discord that it’s been his dream to do a Kanye album.
Them not doing Nas has more to do with Storf’s listening preferences and less to do with any ethical principles.

I just don’t know who else they could put out that would elicit a reaction of “I can’t believe they did that” - they’ve done enough big name artists (Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, etc) and highly hyped ““““exclusives”””” (QOTSA, Mars Volta, etc) that there’s not much left that would really be that surprising. R Kelly, I guess - but that seems much less likely than Kanye.

I mean, I’ll take it all back if they put out a 2LP Prince of Egypt Soundtrack with one disc on “burning bush swirl” and the second disc on “parting the sea splatter” - that would be unbelievably great.

But if VMP is telling me they’re going to do something unbelievable, I’m more inclined to be suspicious, given their track record.

And he’s just admitted his anti Semitism remarks where deliberate to “fight fire with fire” against racism. - I kid you not

I just joined the VMP discord just to see exactly what was being said about Kanye this week.

On 10/17 (Monday), Storf posted:

When you wake up and see that Kanye is buying the Trump social media app from Candace Owens husband and you know your dreams of Graduation as a VMP Essential are slipping through your fingers yet again

Then someone else made a comment about how it’s “dark days out there for life long Kanye stans”

Then Storf said “He retired after Life of Pablo, in my own head canon”

Then Pauly says:
Idk, as a fan since '04, this is just par for the course.
I separated this dude from his music ages ago.

Kanye the musician is one of the best producers and rappers of all time.

Kanye the human is just as flawed as anyone else, he just displays his flaws in miraculous fashion, and also happens to have an audience to witness all of it.

1) It definitely sounds like Storf had been planning and hoping to do something Kanye-related up until this week, despite everything else that we all already knew about Kanye. But also doesn’t sound like he’s completely ruled it out for further down the road.

2) I’m also surprised that Pauly is so nonchalant in his comments - Kanye wasn’t this problematic in 04 (at least not so visibly). I’m hoping that his use of the word “miraculous” to describe Kanye’s…cultural engagment… is somehow a mistake. That’s not a word that should be used to describe his recent statements/behavior.

I would be real blown away by exclusive gets of stuff that's legit hard to get. Fucking impress me VMP, drop some Selected Ambient Works Vol II, the first 4 Danzig albums ("Story of Danzig" with a misfits disc, a samhain disc and liner notes as comics from danzigs verotik), In der Garten Der Pharaoos, Nick Drake -- either the fruit tree box or just really nice vmp treatments of the main albums; the american pink moon is notoriously noisy for example, Tom Ze; their 80s offerings are thin on the ground IMO. Soul Coughing. Porno For Pyros. Ween. A store drop of The Cure's Wish on some fancy red and blue vinyl? maybe with Show and Paris available too? fuckin' sign me up storf, broski.

But....

...sadly that's more likely.

There's a difference in separating art from a problematic artist or deceased artist and being unable to do so with an artist who is actively trying to cause harm to entire swathes of people. No one should be helping fund more of Kanye's sickness.

VMP Really wants to blow people's minds, they'd do a soundtrack on the Essentials track for the first time. Start with Marie Antoinette, which really could use a repress. Even the 2020 B&N exclusive is going for like $300 these days.

Still trying to decide whether to swap the Beastie Boys for credit. I am happy with my current pressing. But I think I will just as more money to the Impulse piggy bank. If there are good reviews of the BBs then I can swap Dylan for it in December. Decision made.
I subbed for 3 months to get the Springsteen and Dylan - hoping Dylan’s worth the extra copy and Ive never picked upNebraska.
I
Beastie Boys is an easy swap for me and went for the Sigur Ros.
which I’m pretty happy with but was going to have a final check before swaps closed.
i can’t see option to edit that swap tho. Have they removed that feature ?

They did remove editing swaps. I think you can contact CS during the swap window though.

Danzig is a good one to mention. Others off the top of my head would be Frank Ocean and maybe Damion Marley
