Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

It's true, even when they pick a good artist they pick the worst album in their discography. Future Honest? Are people clamoring to hear that on vinyl? Does that ever come up on the suggestion threads?

I mean this is flat out untrue, the selection recently has been very hit or miss in my opinion but it's hard to argue that they didn't pick top tier Goodie Mob, Denzel Curry, Noname, Queen Latifah, Lil Wayne, Camp Lo, Juvenile, Rick Ross, Slowthai, Saba, Method Man, Little Simz, MF DOOM and De La Soul releases, those are just off the top of my head and all of them had releases that would be at least in their top 3 projects

I'm just streaming Future's "Honest" and it doesn't sound like a record I need to have anytime soon. This most likely will also be a swap for me. Given how many people seem not to enjoy it, I guess it will stick around in store for a longer time anyway.

Meanwhile, if it was The Pinkprint it would be an Instabuy for me. Or Megan thee Stallion.

Are we very sure it will be Future? 😛
I hope VMP is trolling with their Future retweet.. but unlikely.

I dunno, the critics liked Honest:

That's interesting. According to this it reaches 60/ 100 by average listeners

If it's that record, I'm happy for all enjoying it, but I don't think I need it.

I've only been a member since July and have swapped R&HH a majority of those months. R&HH is my favorite genre. They need better curation, they don't even pick an artists best record (this future pick being the most recent example)

Anything at all you liked in those months? Was it a case of perhaps having some of it already combined with not liking others or what? You got a large R&HH collection to begin with?

I don't have a massive collection as I just started seriously collecting again about 1.5 years ago. That being said, I haven't had anything and passed on it because of that.

The things I kept since the july Tical release I signed up with were : Run DMC (was dish warped with no replacement available), Blackalicious, El P. The only classics I have passed on during this period was the Latin one (name is escaping me). I've gotten more "old" R&HH (De La, Lil Wayne, Clipse, Camp Lo, BIG, Doom, Outkast) in swaps than I have new releases. There are others that I want that I missed out on from the past as well. I signed up for this service for R&HH and absolutely stayed solely because of classics.

I just don't think this sub matches what it used to be. There are so many amazing Rap and Hip Hop albums that need re-issuing instead we get future and salt n peppa and one of the least desired roots albums (luckily they gave us phrenology with essentials).

This also seems to be the general consensus

I've found the RHH to perhaps be the most polarizing of the tracks, and maybe that's just due to the wide variety and styles that fall under the RHH banner and I might be a bit more picky in my tastes. I started off as a RHH subscriber two years ago (thanks Mm.. Food) but had a similar problem where I found myself swapping more often than I'd keep a record.

I've since gone on to make Classics my primary track and rarely find myself swapping from it.

The curation isn't good for me as well, but I don't care what they do with the sub, I just won't get it.

I wish they'd focus more on less pop chart stuff and not prioritize first time on vinyl so much, unless it's some underground thing that the artist never did themselves. I'd also be excited if they did more obvious classics but focused on getting the mastering and pressing quality right, since that is missing from many 90s hip hop reissues.

Again, I'm glad for the people who have been happy with the picks, but I'm at a point where I only get one VMP album a month and the RHH doesn't usually cut it lately.

Sorry for long essay but anyone willing to read thanks

I joined VMP sometime around 2014. I was monthly and dipped in and out depending on what the ROTM was before it was renamed Essentials.

When they announced an R&HH sub I was pumped as R&HH is my main genre of focus and at least 90% of my personal overall listening I reckon.

I was initially underwhelmed with some of the choices, that's when I took a step back and realised well it is curation and I'm not the only customer they have so it is either going to be hit or miss.

I expected from it being the specific genre I love to be more hit but I don't know if it has tbh. Underwhelmed happens quite frequently

I also thought well I either get on board and hopefully pick up stuff that

1. Hasn't been pressed and want
2. Is a superior version of an album I already own
3. Is something I wouldn't have ever picked up myself but end up enjoying or some cases loving
4. Worst comes to worst there is usually something else available to my taste I can swap for
5. Clues & Guessing from members on here lead me to listen to other albums I wouldn't have perhaps tried or come across by myself also

With that in mind I haven't cancelled my sub in almost 2 years so I suppose it's somewhat worked for me to an extent.

The shipping included for everything I buy from them is a big staying point for me, importing from anywhere to Ireland generally adds at least 10 to 20 euros on top of the vinyl cost so being able to get store exclusives etc is great too

Conversely & Admittedly I do often feel massive surges of elation when guesses come through like as recent as this month the thoughts of possibly getting MNIMN on vinyl followed by major deflation when it starts to point to Nicki Minaj but levels back out again when it comes to Future Honest

If I look at the vinyl I've received through the sub majority of it I've probably "just got on board with", a minor handful of it has been gems I wouldn't have bought off my own back followed by a minor handful of it being something I really wanted personally

Most months in here if I'm being honest feels like folk just accepting whatever they are being given without being especially happy about it

So do we stick with the curation of some random vmp employees in hope of adding the odd gem now and then? Or do we quit and curate our own collections via discogs and other outlets?

I think the FOMO of what's coming next month keeps majority of us here sadly....

It is impossible to please everybody all of the time though

Nope! That's why I've never really gotten the club format. No way I would have signed up for one track without lots of swap options. I'm glad VMP has done as many albums I want as they have, because my subscription contains a lot of track switching and swapping. I also rarely get more than one album per month.

tbh finally listening to the pinkprint

the first 3 songs are pretty solid... i could actually cop it if i wasn't slightly embarassed since after starships made me hate her i made her a joke as a kid

For me, it's definitely not FOMO! I really do like the Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM picks enough to pick them up! Rick Ross & T.I. both had some real outstanding tracks, like there were at least 5 amazing tracks on each of those ROTM's, which was why i picked them up! I'm happy with Salt-N-Pepa. It's an album I'd purchase if it was just a VMP store exclusive! Erykah Badu's ROTM was cool, I love the beats on Knwledge's Hud Dreems, Da Brat's Funkdafied is a nice summer g-funk listen and i do like that N*E*R*D* album; Fly Or Die.....even though I would've preferred In Search Of... or Seeing Sounds as the R&HH ROTM pick instead! RUN-DMC was a real old-school treat and Living legends was a nice underground ROTM to add to the collection, something cool to play when you're just cleaning your room on a day off work! 🧹😁

I do like all the Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM picks so far, even though I'd rate T.I., N*E*R*D*, Rick Ross, Living Legends and Da Brat all a 6/10-7/10 in terms of the pick! 👍

Future's Honest is going to be the first pick I'd personally rate the album/pick a (or less than) 3.5/4 out of 10! It will also be the first R&HH ROTM I do not pick up. Like I have previously stated though, "Move The Dope", was the best rap single of 2014 in my opinion!!! 💎

I get what you’re saying here and you may be right in many peopls cases, But I personally like VMPs curation alot. Like Nathan, Future would be the first RHH album Im a bit disappointed with in the whole run, and for me thats mainly because I really wanted The Pinkprint.

I have a pretty diverse music taste and I feel like thats important if you want to not be disappointed in a sub like this. They pick from all over the genre and thats exactly how I want it. I like that we get a mix of old school classics, overlooked albums of popular artists, more indie rhh, etc. Its honestly impossible to please everyone. I have my complaints about VMP, but the curation definitely is not one of them (for any of the tracks). If it was, I wouldnt be a subscriber

Its all subjective at the end of the day. They can't please everyone all of the time.

I actually should properly look at what I've got and review it as such but...

Off the top of my head....

I've received vinyl I probably never would of bought off my own back and end up absolutely loving
Queen Latifah, Ivy Soul, Living Legends, Blackalicious are examples

I've received vinyl i already had in my collection or wanted but could of just picked up cheaper variants elsewhere... examples
The Roots How I Got Over, Run DMC Living Hell, N.E.R.D, Slowthai, Snoop Dogg, Outkast (granted not this version) Method Man, Erykah Badu

I've recieved vinyl or skipped vinyl i never wanted to own
Snp, Kxnowledge, Open Mike Eagle, Camp Lo, Rico Nasty, Da Brat,

I've received vinyl that wasn't previously pressed or readily available that I really really wanted and am thrilled with
T.I. , Lil Wayne, Juvenile, De La Soul, Handsome Boy Modelling School, El-P

Looking at this it's probably roughly somewhere around 50/50 overall for me actually
1/4 great curation 1/4 stuff I really wanted (50%hit) mixed with 1/4 bad curation 1/4 stuff I could of got elsewhere or had already (50% miss)
Future will be a hit for me personally

Quickly doing this up while in work sorry if its not fully clear and its just imo

While you posted this I was thinking about my own collection (see below your comment). I agree with a lot of your points. I'm happy to continue to stay subbed right now. I think a bad run of 3 or 4 in a row then I would think about having to give up on it but thats never happened to be fair to VMP for me anyway
