Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

its one of if not the most expensive albums i own

the only one probably more expensive is my young thug jeffery
The Buttercream variant for Summertime '06 looks beautiful! It matches the album cover perfectly! Omg, I absolutely love my Young Thug Jeffery! The blue marble on that one looks so nice too! Shoutout again to @Hunna for selling me the VMP Young Thug 🙏

Yeah, if you did a massive poll amongst all The Roots' fans and ask what is their best album, 'Things Fall Apart' would come out at #1!

Just like how "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" would come out as #1 if you did the same question for Kanye West!
I don't know if I would agree with those results necessarily, but you're right, I wouldn't be surprised by them as the most popular.

i think that is more a question of what style of roots you want, the more classic jazzy raps of the first 3 to 4 records they made or the more ambitious and high energy tracks of phrenology
Yeah, for sure. I like both, but sometimes it is hard to compare them against each other for that reason.

Is that so? I may be out of touch with the Kanye fandom, but I always assumed either his first or second album was generally regarded as his best?
Nope! The College Dropout is my favourite Kanye West Album and I think it is his best, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (MBDTF) is regarded as his best! I remember they did a poll, and MBDTF actually easy came out on top!

I prefer Kanye West's first two albums + 808's & Heartbreak & Kids See Ghosts more than MBDTF (808's & heartbreak & MBDTF are pretty equal for me).

Huh, interesting. His first two I’d consider absolute masterpieces. MBDTF is incredibly ambitious and admirable in its own right but it’s not my favorite. I’d rank Graduation and Life of Pablo over it. I have a weird love for Life of Pablo I think.

I’m a huge roots fan and have been listening to them since their early days. I went back and listened to all of their albums when the Phrenology reissue came out and I personally think Undun and How I got Over are their weakest two albums, and illadelph and Do You Want More?? are their best. I think the two best are pretty commonly agreed upon but ask 10 people to rank the rest and you’ll get 10 different answers which really goes to show how consistent they are. They might be the best rap group of all time considering quality, consistency and number of releases.
I always thought it was a common consensus that Thing Fall Apart was their best record.

I also really like The Life of Pablo! The singles/main tracks from that album are all exceptional; Ultralight Beam, Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1, Famous, Real Friends, No More Parties In LA, & Fade! Those tracks are just incredible and I still get goosebumps hearing the instrumental on the last part of FML! 🔥🔥🔥

You think most people agree do you want more is their top two? I love it but I always thought the consensus top two was Illadelph and Things Fall Apart. Many seem to prefer Game Theory to Do You Want More as well, but they are very different.
I do, yeah, but I’m guessing it depends on when you got into them. Do you want more And Illadelph halflife were the absolute hottest cutting edge shit when they came out. After that, that cutting edge factor was slightly reduced. The hype was bigger than ever during the lead up to Things Fall Apart but it was generally considered a let down to those early fans even. Their maturity and musicianship increased for sure after those early albums but they became a little more cerebral maybe, and less hit you in the guts hot. If you discovered them later on the cutting edge factor of their early albums might not translate to the times you were living in then. So I guess nostalgia is part of it but I honestly don’t know anyone who doesn’t see those as the top two, not that my circle worldwide or anything lol

Yeah those are all great. Waves always gets me too. It’s just.... so beautiful. It’s one of my favorite Kanye songs.

Man. I miss when Kanye West’s music could almost move me to tears. I hope he gets through... whatever it is he’s currently going through.

No I really don’t agree. For the same reasons that I mentioned up above about the roots. If you were a Kanye fan from the start you probably prefer college dropout or late registration. If you came into kanye after that of course you can objectively see that MBDTF is the best!

For kanye I am and fan from the start who is an exception to the rule.

Kanye’s run of innovation is unrivaled. Yeezie topped the Pazz & Jop Critics poll 4(!) times from 2004 to 2013 with The College Dropout, Late Registration, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus respectively that is an unprecedented run.

I totally get where you're coming from and I know that some original fans felt that way about Things Fall Apart, but I don't think it holds true for popular opinion anymore since their fanbase has grown way beyond that. I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong for picking them or anything. I think Do You Want More is actually underappreciated these days, if you look at RYM for instance. That's why I was surprised to see you say that most people would agree.

I don't think it's his best album but most Kanye West fans do think it is. If we asked Kanye West fans who were fans from the start, then I agree that we would probably get The College Dropout or Late Registration being #1. But for now, MBDTF easily ranks as the #1 Kanye West favourite album amongst all Kanye fans.

The College Dropout I think would come 2nd I'd think!

I always thought everyone though Illadeplh Halflife was their best record 🤷🏼‍♂️
I've seen a sort of dichotomy where a certain kind of hip hop head will definitely hold that one as the number one and say Things Fall Apart is overrated, but I think the popular opinion choice is Things Fall Apart, if you know what I mean. I think they're both wonderful records myself.

Yes, RateYourMusic is a great source! Things Fall Apart has more than 7,000 ratings and holds the highest score for any The Roots album! Things Fall Apart would definitely be considered The Roots' best album amongst most of The Roots fans! No other The Roots album has over 4,000 ratings on RateYourMusic! And Things Fall Apart has 7,000+

Things Fall Apart also ranks in the top 500 albums of all time in the RateYourMusic list! No other The Roots album even ranks in the top 500, let alone top 1000 top albums of RateYourMusic too!

I mean personally I'm not trying to argue which is better. Depending on the day, I'd probably pick different ones. I think there is definitely a respectable argument that Illadelph is better. But, we were just talking popular opinion.

RYM is a pretty good source. It's community definitely has some biases but I don't think it is a bad reference keeping that in mind.
