Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Oh man somebody go find the opening scene of Joe Vs. the Volcano please.
For what it's worth every time I order something from VMP I feel like I'm wilfully inserting myself metaphorically into the never ending disaster scene from The Money Pit.
Two Hanks movies that I've watched for the first time during this quarantine. What's next, THE 'BURBS?

Yeah I mean Discogs is a pig if you’re not that way inclined and I’d wager a majority of people on here don’t use it, or only use it to buy/sell rather than catalogue, never mind the more casual end of their pool, about 1 in 5 would sound right. I think that number was taken from the prospectus to crowd fund Flaming Lips/QOTSA/Aretha but I’d agree that it is likely the number for a good month rather than for every month.

Ive not updated Discogs in about 18 months.

I keep seeing this number, and I think it is quite a high estimate. Scanning the discogs entries for the past six or seven essentials (at least the ones I have), the number of these in people's collections range from 1849 (Caroline Rose) to 6051 (Queens of the Stone Age). The average is more like 3500. I know not everyone uses discogs, so a bit of extrapolation with some assumptions can be made from limited release numbers.

Here are some "In collection"/"total press" numbers for known quantity limited editions:
431/750 = 57%
574/1500 = 38%
342/750 = 45%
592/1500 = 39%
266/500 = 53%
234/500 = 46%

As you can see these vary a bit from 38% to 57%. So taking this range for QotSA, the range of essentials subscribers would potentially be 10615 to 15923.
High end math if only 38% people have in collection: 6051/0.38 = 15923
Low end math if 57% have in their collection: 6051/0.57 = 10615

Another way to look at it, is if there are indeed 30,000 essentials subscribers, that means only 20% of the QotSA collectors are using discogs.

Granted, this makes some assumptions that people are using discogs truthfully. Also, the limited editions are indeed limited to the number advertised. These estimates may even be a bit high, since limited editions attract more collectors who may be inclined to use discogs more than the average user.

I'm sure this calculation flawed is somehow, but I think their subscriber base for one track is closer to a max of 15,000, and averaging closer to 7000.

That's what I do with having more time....
You can’t base anything off Discogs. 95% of people who buy vinyl likely don’t even know about it. It’s a niche thing.

Since Friday I got shipping updates for 10 records, shipped in 5 different packages. One of them has this in the DHL tracking info that I haven’t seen before, wondering if anyone else has in the past:

I had this recently too. The tracking number didn’t ever update after that, but the package did arrive in about the same amount of time as usual. Hopefully it works out that way for you too.

I could have sworn the language was 30,000 total track subscriptions, not 30,000 unique subscribers. Most subscribers I’d wager have 2-3 tracks per month after add ons.

I agree that most people don’t fully catalogue their collections and there are likely a ton of VMP subscribers who don’t either. I’d say 15k unique subscribers is probably a decent guess...but who knows after everything going on with VMP plus a pandemic going on...

Maybe I’m missremembering, only one way to find out...

Just checked the kickfurther campaigns, you’re right 27,000 active paying subscribers.

Edit: Wait, does that actually make me right? I’m confused....
That would make you right. That seems wildly inaccurate but they would know better than my guesses (I’d hope at least)! I think I had been going off of numbers from an older article and not that campaign. That would mean at least 9k subscribe to essentials most likely since they said it’s their most popular track. Geez. Can you imagine how many copies of some of their underselling pressings are just sitting in a warehouse?? No wonder they can’t predict how many copies of something to sell months in advance. If you have a month with 2 duds and 1 popular item you’re fucked. You could theoretically have anywhere from 1-29,000 copies of an album sold each month.

I think the classics and rhh are much more limited than that. From casual conversations in the old place i would be shocked if combined they’re over 7-8k. It’s the essentials that’s the real monster that the vast majority are in for, a significant drop off or over estimation in that could potentially be disastrous.

Yea I wanted to get an idea of how many were pressed so on reddit awhile back I said RHH had 7k subscribers in response to something Storf posted and he said it’s nowhere near that and he wished it was that many. I’d guess closer to 3-4K for RHH. I think the early albums had around 1500 on that track.

They promised the classics were 1,000 if I remember properly. They subsequently repressed 2 of the first 3 classics but 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yea I think the early ones were 1K only but they surely upped it as it got more popular. I get why they don’t advertise their pressing numbers from a FOMO business perspective...but it can be pretty frustrating as a customer.

I also only recently found out that some of the early classics (john Lee hooker) and BN x VMP albums were from a digital source. Kevin Gray subtly confirmed it on the SHF.
