Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

It's not a bad looking unit by any stretch, and I think they hit a nice price point for the combo.
Personally, I would want separates. I think you can find a DAC that sounds great and can last for a decade. But keeping up with streaming platforms and software updates... I think that's going to be harder.

I have been saying for years that Smart TV's a ticking time bombs till they become extra dumb TVs. Your TVs general TV tech will last for years on end. We're on the verge of adding a Roku or something like that to our bedroom TV because the "smart" functionality has become so painfully slow and clunky over the years. Just like cell phones and computers - the hardware usually well outlives the software.

I bring that up, because I think in 5-7 years there are going to be a lot people running these combo units that have a great DAC & SACD player, but they are selling them off or buying external streamers because the company didn't keep up with software updates.

Except all tvs are smart TVs and I know no one who uses the smart features just their various boxes attached. Once it has a few HDMI sockets you’ll be grand.

Yup, it's the nature of the beast now. Luckily hifi isn't there yet. It might be close for SACD players though, very few of those coming out that aren't also networked. But I've also never really bothered with SACD either.

Yeah but I don’t see what makes that unfortunate, it has HDMI inputs so who cares?

Again once it plays the CD/SACD I don’t see the issue if that’s its main purpose. The disc drive isn’t suddenly going to be disabled, the media is stable. You may lose streaming to it but I mean is that why you buy a disc player? You buy it to spin discs, the rest is a nice bonus.

@brownsugah - I just got an email from VMP letting me know that the Mariah Carey exclusives have been restocked! The bundle is now back in stock! 🙌

You will however be receiving these two exclusives in February 2021/ they will start shipping in February, aa opposed to December 2020!

VMP confirmed on the email that everyone who purchased the albums before they went out of stock will be getting their copies first!

Now I have had an email from them to say that the Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Just Coolin is being pushed to early October.

same. what an oddly worded email and weird "oh fyi" sentiment. as if they haven't been totally silent on it since it was on sale. a half a year ago. when i read e-mails like this one i just want to grab someone there and forcefully shake them.

I take your point and, in a later post, @Joe Mac hit it on the head (at least for what I'm looking for): in the end, it will still play SACD/CD. I have enough (hybrid) SACDs at this point to justify (IMO) upgrading my CD transport to an SACD player.

A network player is secondary for me and I'll mostly utilize the WIFI cape (to hook up to my PCs vast music library) or Bluetooth. The streaming capabilities are more something I MAY use but are hardly a concern. Mostly I had thought about the Yamaha CD-S1000 or S2100 (~$1,300 or $3,000 respectively), which only has the SACD function.

Arcam makes an SACD/network player but it isn't super well-reviewed and I think at its price point (1,200) for all of that, you're going to be making concessions.

However, the Technics SL-G700 has some good professional reviews, especially regarding the SACD/CD and DAC (Asahi Kasei). I think at the $3000 point you're getting a great bundle. Could you future proof by getting network separates? Of course. But I'm really sold on the SL-G700s SACD and DAC section (gotta check out what the Marantz has under the hood).

I'll also submit that a DAC that sounds good now can last a lifetime. There will always be something newer, shinier, and brighter; but there are DACs from the 90s that still sound great relative to newer offerings.

My lowest numbers were nos. 3 and 4 for a title I don't remember. I forced myself to forget because both jackets arrived with nasty seam splits and corner crushes (plus one had a static causing pressing flaw), and VMP didn't have replacement copies due to a quick sellout and a slow delivery.

I just suggested this on another forum, but if you don't need the network features at all, and you can get by just running a computer into the DAC, I'd keep an eye out for a Marantz Ruby DAC/SACD player. That unit is next level. You'll be done for a long time unless you just dislike the Marantz house sound.

Are you referencing the SA-KI Ruby?

If so, I've looked at that. It does seem to be a great component. At $4,000 it is outside my self-imposed cap of $3K. Of course, who knows when I actually go to pull the trigger....I may spend more with some sort of self-soothing justification as to why it was worth it.
