Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Yeah, and that's before shipping for non-members. So for a non-member to take a chance on a rising artists, they want $40 for an unknown artist? Honestly the label should be subsidizing some of the cost in my opinion because they probably get a measurable number of streams for being a featured artist.

But also knowing that VMP is beholden to investors and a board, they probably do a kick back from the label on these. Wouldn't shock me one bit.

And while we're at it, can we talk about pure percentages here for a second? We're looking at a 36% price increase! That's what really tossed me off the VMP boat. I get needing to keep up with inflation to an extent, but that percentage is insane. That's also the price increase that got me off the subscription. In reality, the difference of $300 to $400 per year wasn't going to impact my day to day. But I just couldn't tolerate a 33% price jump. So I spoke with my wallet. And I continue to speak with my wallet. Honestly, if it wasn't for the one Fiona album that I don't have in the collection, I wouldn't have looked at VMPs site in months. I'm actually quite surprised by how little I miss it.
i think the deal that VMP makes with rising artists is that they give the artist a bunch of free copies to sell at their shows/on their sites.

there have been a few releases here and there that i have wanted to pick up in the past year or so (Aretha - Spirit in the Dark, Meters - Fire on the Bayou, a few ROTMs, the Cadet Anthology) but there have been way fewer true exclusives in store and I'm not really interested in color variants or trying to buy the most limited version of something that will eventually end up way cheaper. i'll be out after my current 3 month sub ends.

Our of all their store drops over a period of almost 3 years now all I’ve wanted is Aretha. Thanks again for that Mike! It’s great. Hopefully some more rare Aretha can come up in the future, there are 3 more albums of hers I’d still like copies of…

There’s been that, Bill Withers, and some of the jazz classics for me. One or two country albums too. But if I look at all the VMP stuff I have, a majority of it is from the earlier years of the service and not nearly as much the past year or two

Ah yeah I’m not including the tracks. I got that Bill off ethos at Paladin and a few other RoTMs. In terms of store releases the Aretha is the only one.

The soul and jazz stuff is almost always on point. Boogaloo and wanted one soul singer, of Irma Thomas, I'd put those up there with Aretha's spirit

Yeah and that’s probably largely the problem for me. No interest in jazz and I know what I want from soul. The store used to be much wider now it’s just really narrowly focused. The lack of complimentary releases for the AoTMs is really sad too.

I imagine part of that is licensing is getting more expensive for the great titles so have to dig a bit deeper. Agree that the lack of complimentary releases has been a bit of a bummer. Out of 4 tracks I’m lucky if one or two are records I’d actually want anymore especially for the price.

The true store exclusives are what I like but usually only 2-3 per year anymore. I ordered the Elton John Honky Chateau exclusive today since it’s the only AAA RKS cut apparently. Aretha and The Meters were great too. And Yusef Lateef. But that’s about it in the past year and a half. The Sparklehorse box is also really awesome. Still surprised they got that and it hasn’t been released anywhere else

I thought it had extra stuff in a book. I don't remember
It had a little comic book I think. But everything about the pressing was the same as the generic one. Never really understood why people were willing to pay an lot for it outside of superfans who really wanted the extra comic.

Also surely their license has lapsed by now and since they don’t own the plates, can’t imagine them getting the rights to it again for cheap.

To be fair, i assume it’s a Shopify limitation and they aren’t just doing it for the hell of it
Possibly.if I had to guess it’s a function of ensuring it doesn’t use credit as a default for preferred payment on every transaction.
