i think the deal that VMP makes with rising artists is that they give the artist a bunch of free copies to sell at their shows/on their sites.Yeah, and that's before shipping for non-members. So for a non-member to take a chance on a rising artists, they want $40 for an unknown artist? Honestly the label should be subsidizing some of the cost in my opinion because they probably get a measurable number of streams for being a featured artist.
But also knowing that VMP is beholden to investors and a board, they probably do a kick back from the label on these. Wouldn't shock me one bit.
And while we're at it, can we talk about pure percentages here for a second? We're looking at a 36% price increase! That's what really tossed me off the VMP boat. I get needing to keep up with inflation to an extent, but that percentage is insane. That's also the price increase that got me off the subscription. In reality, the difference of $300 to $400 per year wasn't going to impact my day to day. But I just couldn't tolerate a 33% price jump. So I spoke with my wallet. And I continue to speak with my wallet. Honestly, if it wasn't for the one Fiona album that I don't have in the collection, I wouldn't have looked at VMPs site in months. I'm actually quite surprised by how little I miss it.
there have been a few releases here and there that i have wanted to pick up in the past year or so (Aretha - Spirit in the Dark, Meters - Fire on the Bayou, a few ROTMs, the Cadet Anthology) but there have been way fewer true exclusives in store and I'm not really interested in color variants or trying to buy the most limited version of something that will eventually end up way cheaper. i'll be out after my current 3 month sub ends.
