You're a year off for Crate, can't remember when Swaps started up (maybe 2017-18?, after the Classics & RHH tracks). I was one of the first people on Crate, due to not being interested in a monthly sub for records I didn't want (Torres, Hot Chip). I'd signed up for Menomena, and then reached out asking if I could have my membership suspended for May or if I'd need to drop out & sign up later.

That's when I was offered Crate by Matt (c/p below). It was initially $4/month, first charged in May 2015; full access to the monthly store & free shipping, no guaranteed record. I got a couple indie rock records from the store ($17 each) that month, as well as one of the remaining Ben Webster Soulville and repressed Dilla ($23 each). On the downside, I had to pay full price for each monthly record I did want, rather than the discount with an extended sub, but the prices were at least reasonable for a time. I can't identify the point at which they upped it to $6 due to increased shipping costs.

"We don’t have an opt out policy per se, but we do have an option where you can downgrade to a $4/month plan which gives you access to the store, Standard, etc. You can keep your membership active and order whatever your heart desires from the member store and skip the Torres release. You can go back up to a normal plan at any time or stay on the $4/month plan as long as you’d like*.
