Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

No I’ve not! Unfortunately unlikely to any time soon, I have a backlog of about 20 records to spin right now!
Ahhhhh damn! Because I think you would absolutely love that album! I know this is a big call, but I could actually imagine it being one of your favourite albums of the 90’s!

And.......I have a feeling that album might drop as a VMP exclusive this Friday. You’re currently a subscribed VMP, so I thought it would be the perfect idea for you, if Fiona Apple’s “When The Pawn...” really does drop this Friday, to buy the album before it sells out!

Like.....I don’t want to put other artists/albums down, but I’m sure you would prefer “When The Pawn” much, much more than Nilufer Yanya’s “Miss Universe” for example! (Using that album as an example as I know you purchased it this year!). And I’m sure you would also prefer it much more to Brittany Howard’s album that also got released this year!

You’re making BIG claims there @NathanRicaud the 90s was the decade I got into music and contains some serious nostalgia! Also, I still think you are getting far too hyped about a string they’ve been dangling you from for a least 18 months, it could just as easily be any other album.

When The Pawn is probably my favorite Fiona album... Although I can't complain. They're all great.

Tina’d The Infamous.

Considering Beck...what’s everyone’s opinion on the best available variant?
Not even sure I want it.
I never spin my Colors.
I haven’t decided yet. I was going to look at shipping on the clear variant from Beck’s site. I like that VMP is numbered, but I’m not big on the color or the probable shipping delays for weeks or even months after release.

I’m also not sold on this first single, but I do also love Pharrell and the fact that he’s a major contributor to the majority of this album.

I’m convinced I’m going to miss out on Fiona, I don’t check enough anymore... but I have created a google alert of ‘Fiona apple vinyl me please’ just in case I don’t check on Friday. I wonder how many copies they’d press... Mobb Deep selling so quickly scares me.

That’s a good idea. Well, if I see it, I will tag you. As a fellow migraine sufferer, your name is easy to remember. 😉

This might be an unpopular opinion but I feel that flipper’s are the biggest scapegoat in the vinyl collecting community. I feel like “flipping” is and has always been a part of most collecting communities (comic books, trading cards, sneakers, toys, etc...) but for some reason the vinyl collecting community might be the most intolerant of this practice and while I understand the frustration/disappointment that some feel when they miss out on rare/limited releases of their favorite albums only to then find them on the resale market for 2-3 times the MSRP, the vitriol aimed at opportunists seems harsh. Records like many collectibles ebb and flow in value and the individuals flipping are taking advantage of the supply and demand within the collectors marketplace. As collectors, many enjoy rarity and scarcity of limited release, however it’s the limited nature of these release that drive the secondary market. Also, Flippers can list albums for whatever they’d like I doesn’t mean they will sell for that much. As with anything these sellers are trying to establish a floor for what the market is willing to pay. Lots of times the prices on the secondary market will settle down once hype behind a release subsides. I personally have never intentionally flipped records or concert tickets, but I am not opposed to others doing it. Like I said, I get the sour grapes, I just feel there is lots of misdirected anger when things don’t work out. That being said, I do hope that everyone who missed out on The Infamous or any other release eventually finds an affordable copy. Sorry for the diatribe. Carry on.

my hatred of them extends to every and all instance of ticketing and collecting in which I have encountered them and I fundamentally disagree with everything you have said in defence of them.

To each their own. I collected comic and basketball cards prior to collecting wax and flipping is prevalent in all collecting communities, it wasn’t until I get serous into collecting wax that I notice the way more prevalent outrage of this practice within the record collecting community. I personally have missed out on releases and have also paid more than the MSRP for a record It’s not ideal but I guess I have accepted that it’s part and parcel with collecting. To me, It’s all part of the machine.

I just consider them to be parasites, they give nothing and take take take. It disgusts me. The legislative moves that are aiming to end touting for live events is something I’m hugely in favour of. I’ve never been a fan of just accepting the status quo though, if the machine don’t work get rid of it and build a better one...

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Look at health care charges, opportunistic gas / food costs, cable/TV/internet, etc.

Healthy capitalism is great. Unfortunately, there's often not a fair playing field; but I suppose this is a conversation for a different thread (Hot Takes?)

The only way I personally see there ever be an elimination of secondary markets is to completely eliminate the limitedness of products/services and this isn’t feasible from a production standpoint and would also destroy collecting culture (something I kinda enjoy). flippers are the yin to collecting cultures yang.

I still think they’re hateful parasites but then I also hate artificial limitations on availability, I’m a fan of the thing, not of how many of the thing exists...

I agree completely, but all that is a much larger issue. I am working from the current capitalist systems in place, of course idealistically there are things on a macro level that could theoretically take place to make things more equitable for everyone. But when collectors miss out on a title they don’t go on Social Media and say fuck Capitalism they say fuck flippers. Flippers are a symptom but not the cause.

Sometimes you can’t immediately change the root cause but you’ve got to eradicate the symptoms to make life tolerable...

The same reason as always. There is a FOMO fire around a supposed “huge” exclusive that storf has purposely stocked by saying it may or may not appear tomorrow and the hype machine has built that up into having to be Fiona.
Would think they would say it today before it releases tomorrow. Do they do surprise drops?
