What's Going On Up There- The Headphone Thread

They are a classic for a reason. IMO they are special with tube amplification. I have a DarkVoice tube amp and have also been enjoying them with my recently acquired PS Audio BHK Preamp.

The 6XX are a nice contrast to the more detailed LCD-X I usually listen to.
The NAD seems to play well with them. For shits and giggles, I plugged them into the Marantz last night (mostly to play with the filters cause I use the NAD’s DAC) and they were surprisingly harsh. So good amplification is definitely something they crave.

Okay, so I been going down a rabbit hole this afternoon while baking stuff to take to the in-laws.

A headphone amp. Ideally, you are running the pre out into the headphone amp. This would require you to hook the line out on the amp to the pre in to be able to amplify over the speakers, right?

So, theoretically, the way to have the best of both worlds would be to have one of them amp selectors or a passive pre running between the two? I could then switch to the headphone amp for headphone listing or swap back to the integrated’s pre to use the dsp? Or am I over thinking this?

The best way is to have a tape/recording loop or line level out that feeds the headphone amp. Then you can a line level output it and let it manage the volume control for the headphones.

@kvetcha since I’m mostly copying your amp setup, how do you listen with headphones on your system? The Khozmo has two line outs I think, but no way to turn one on or off, right?

I know that’s the best way but I don’t have an amp from the seventies… 😝

I actually haven’t been using headphones lately - previously I had plugged them directly into the Kingko, which had a built in headphone amp. Will probably have to integrate something into the system sooner or later.

Ideally you have a line out going to the headphone amp and control volume from headphone amp as has been described.

I primarily listen to digital for headphones and connect the headphone amp directly to the DAC.

The few times I’ve listened to vinyl via headphones I connect the phono pre directly to the headphone amp.

I have an old school system with no headphone jack . Atom AMP 2 and Sennheiser HD 600 on there way . 40 % off on the headphone and I could not resist .

I have a tape out on my Conrad Johnson PV10 and understand that I can connect the headphone amp to this jack as it bypasses pretty much everything including the volume control and this allows me to control the volume from the headphone amp . I have also been told not to turn on the power amp . I would use the selector on the CJ PV 10 to control the source , in my case either the TT or CD player .

Does this sound correct to everyone ? My wife keeps yelling at me to turn the volume down to the point I dont enjoy the music . Hope this will make this issue go away ---no dont mean my wife she can stay .

Yep everything you said sounds spot on to me.

Yes. Connect Atom to the line out and you should be good to go.

Got the Atom amp 2 and Sennheiser HD 600 Stereo Headphones yesterday and we are just getting use to each other but it works . Will need to get a longer cord at around 15 feet as the 10 foot one is a bit on the short side .Was looking at the Youkamoo below ---has anyone had any experience with them .

I would contact Hart Audio Cables or Periapt Cables and have the make one to your specifications.

I think the issue with the khozmo is that it has two line outs but believe both are on at all times…can’t switch between the two

I think that they also aren’t line outs. They’re pre outs so the volume pot will always adjust them. I think most line out or pre outs on nearly all pre-amps will always be on but you can just switch off whichever of the headphone or power amp you’re not using.

I made the decision to exit the vinyl game. Haven’t bought any in a year or more and it sadly comprises only a fraction of my listening. Sold my turntable and phono stage. A bigger system downsizing is ahead as my listening habits and interests have changed.

Mixed feelings but…. purchased a Woo Audio WA5-LE 2nd Gen to up the headphone game. I look forward to running it with my HD660S2’s and will begin the hunt for another pair of headphones.

More to come.
