Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz (Columbia, 1958 First 6-Eyed Mono Pressing)

This is just a magical album with a line-up of musicians that makes me do a double-take each time I look. There's a great story to it as well. Columbia had not paid Michel Legrand for several sessions and in an attempt to defuse the situation, the label offered to cover the costs of an album for him, allowing him to choose the repertoire and any musicians he wanted. In true 'F-you' style, Legrand hired 31 of the era's greatest jazz musicians (including but not limited to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Phil Woods, Ben Webster, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd....). The result is this absolutely fantastic album!

N&G 500 - my top 50

#39: Antonio Sanches - Buli Povo

Last one of the night. One of the most extraordinary African albums. I searched for this for ages - even sending a friend of mine who was an air hostess to look for it when she flew to Cabo Verde - but I finally got it thanks to Analog Africa. Mad synths make it unlike pretty much anything else I have from West Africa.
