Revisited faves of 22 (including two new faves - Albanese via @avecigrec and Buddy Guy via Spotify reminding me it existed.) Spent a lot of time with McCraven's debut as I start to really deep dive into his latest, an album that I still find fascinating and revelatory every time I listen to it. AIC is still there because of the Opus. Blur comes roundabout from @Thackeraye who tipped me to 1001 Albums Generator which is my latest listening project that will end up sorely neglected two months from now.

Looking forward to new music happening starting this week!

I have yet to meet an Albanese album I don't like. If you're going to dig deeper at all, I highly recommend The Blue Hour - which was my bedtime music for nearly a year straight before my son was born.

I’m on the 1001 Albums thing too; I’m somewhere around album 400 right now. You definitely feel a trend pegging the author as a Brit who came of age in the late 80s and early 90s, but I’ve discovered some gems. I’ve discovered Chocolate Starfish and Hot Dog Flavored Water, but I’ve discovered some gems.

Really? it can't be... I'm four albums in and I would say Garbage's debut is the low point so far. Which as far as low points go is not a bad thing.

Also, I haven't read the book that the generator uses, but I am reading this book:
Amazon product ASIN B007FO8UQA
Which, so far, seems more rounded. But that's based on incredibly small samplings of each. I kind of doubt based on what I have listened to so far from the generator and what @Bull Shannon said above that John Adams's Operas have much of a spot in the other book.

The author/editor of the book is an English writer and naturally any such list is going to expose some biases.

I’m not saying the list is suspect (I’ve hung with it for several hundred albums), I just don’t think I’d include as many albums by The Divine Comedy.

Week 1 recap:

2023Week1.jpg

Breakdown
An unimpressive Week 1 slate of new releases into 2023. Not overly enthused by Nicole Dollanganger, her album just makes me want to veer towards Ethel Cain...but I'll give her a few more tries. New one from the always hard-at-work CHANCE デラソウル is wayyy too long with many of the songs recycling the same melody, but has some enjoyable moments. Moby's ambient project is a borefest. J. Wiegold is dime-a-dozen singer/songwriter, but the ambient tracks were soothing, particularly "Norfolk Serpent II." The Howling Void is an uninspiring, trudging slog of a doom metal album.
Some R&B faves from last year otherwise.

Breakdown

I've been enjoying a lot of music this week. Of last year's releases I hadn't checked out yet I was enjoying Shygirl and Melody's Echo Chamber. The Christine and the Queens as well as the Arctic Monkeys album are complex and not easily accessible, but definitely enjoyable.
Of this week's new releases I found Doom Flower and Allen Epley interesting, but need to listen more to decide on them. Iggy Pop's new release is stronger than I had expected.
Apart from that some favourites from last year and before.
