Your week in music (last.fm collages...)

View attachment 154839

My week: Danielle Ponder, JID, & Open Mike Eagle's albums are so far my favorites of the year. The new Kyson, Loyle Carner, and Nick Hakim albums are all really good too. Mansur Brown's new EP made me revisit his excellent album from last year and pre-order his double EP on Bandcamp. The @musicjunkiegreg recommended Andrina Bollinger album is excellent art pop.
Glad you're enjoying then Andrina Bollinger album!

Week 42 recap

collage - 2022-10-22T053253.004.jpeg

I've been listening to many albums this week, continuing to catch up on Q3. New Björk album is excellent, she hasn't lost it, I agree with @Rip_City. I'm also enjoying Makaya McCraven, a great album, thanks to @Lee Newman for highlighting. New Red Hot Chili Peppers is solid too. The Damien Jurado album was amazing and reminds me a bit of Morrissey regarding the singer's voice.

The Alex G album was enjoyable, also Art d'Ecco, Tamino, Courting, Soccer Mommy, Buzzcocks and Editors who deliver an album combining 80s synths and Indie Rock. MUNA has some great light summer songs on it. Greg Puciato was also a positive surprise, though the album doesn't feel much as a unit there are several songs I've enjoyed. Regina Spektor is worth listening, great melodies and lyrics on this one. Maya Hawke, Gwenno and Naima Bock were also unsuspected positive surprises, some good songs there.

Louis is because I finally picked back up Ted Gioia's How to Listen to Jazz and I am at the part where he discusses the great artists. Japanese Breakfast is because of her ACL performance sparking a reinterest in me. I had kind of dismissed it as 80s nostalgia, but I really enjoyed it this week. Midnights is not top tier Swift. However, it is not as bad as a lot of fans are making it out to be. I'm hoping it is an end cap to her era of sort of immature lyrics and approach to relationships/life. We'll see. I do like the downbeat tone a lot though and Lavender Haze is one of her best songs, ever. Amen Dunes, i wrote about this elsewhere, but this would have been helpful back in February, and I thank @Ghost for giving a push to reevaluate (another album I kind of listened to around release but paid no real attention to). Def Leppard is the Justin Hawkins effect. Bandbox finally sent me the last of the Cash records they did. I had not listened to this one (most of the sun stuff is cash grab collections to capitalize on his popularity after going to Columbia - hell Columbia even had a couple of these, honestly) ... this one is different, these are basically demos and first takes and I dig the rawness. Mavi, thanks to all in the new music thread who pointed it out... it was lost in the shuffle of too many releases a couple of weeks ago. He's also from NC - so double score.

Really interesting grid I had here out the gate... I think Jamila was one of the great albums released that year. I don't like the Judah and the Lion record. Tank is a fave. Jones and Finnigan are still relatively heavy in the rotation. Al Green is a classic as is De La. The Mavis is really good but midtier for her. EU is good stuff I haven't listened to in a long time.

Week 43 recap

A lot of listening to The Libertines as I've seen them live on Wednesday, excellent performance. "Up the bracket" is one time the original, one time the 2022 remaster.
The Taylor Swift album is enjoayble. It's not as good as her recent 2 albums, but I definitely don't think it's as bad as some people say.
Apart from that I've listened to more Q3 albums for the list I finally posted yesterday in the Best of 2022 thread. Some favorites first listened to this week are the albums by Momma, Kyle Kidd, Mall Grab, Saib, Interpol, Psalm One, Kiwo jr., JID, Goose, Miraculous Mule, working men's club, Danielle Ponder and Madison Cunningham. Q3 really had lots of good albums, best quarter this year in my opinion.

Breakdown
Late in posting, but this chart was downloaded on Thursday. Not too much new listened over the past two weeks.
Mavi, CRJ, Charlotte dos Santos, and Skullcrusher were all enjoyable. Not so much for Tswift. Other than that, still running through the collection playthrough at a slow pace, almost finished with the "The" titles.

My week

0BA8D19B-2ABC-45DB-8A5F-C28F400DDEBD.jpeg

Didn’t listen to much music this week. Some vinyl and a bit of streaming here and there. Honestly listened to podcasts instead of music while working and that’s when most of my listening is. CRJ is only number 1 because the title track quickly became one of if not my favorite songs of the year, I don’t remember listening to much else of the album

October (are my monthly grids this new release heavy usually?):

Revolver Super Deluxe has been on steady repeat. In the Canyon Haze has swept me back under Brandi's spell. Hahn, Plains, McCraven, Childers, Clementine and Swift all make strong showings with only Swift producing work that isn't in contention for best of the year. I like the Swift. It's not her best work and I can understand some of the complaints of it being regressive, but then the concept of 13 sleepless nights throughout her life is a concept that would allow for that regression. It also has some of her strongest work to date. I can understand the frustration with it. Now if the next album is also regressive without a thematical conceit - then I could understand folks thinking she might be past her prime. Also, sales and streams would seem to point to those who are complaining being a vocal minority (surprise, surprise).

The rest (with the exception of Affinity which was just me wanting to branch out from Dark Side a bit; Johnny and older McCraven, which were both new acquisitions for the table) are the result of some dedicated listening.

Armstrong is due to digging back into Gioia's wonderful How to Listen to Jazz. As both of those were retrospective box sets, I doubt Coleman Hawkins will see the same presence next month.

The Toure & Diabate and Amen Dunes are due to @Ghost, who ultimately is responsible for this more dedicated listening practice throughout the week. Japanese Breakfast was an extension of that, but was inspired by seeing her ACL performance.
