Your week in music (last.fm collages...)

Week 39 recap:

Breakdown
I had this saved from yesterday night, just didn't post until now.
Decent week, but only Beth Orton (who I am new to) stood out the most. Newest from The Comet is Coming is enjoyable, though not nearly as mind-bendingly amazing as Trust in the Lifeforce... was from '19. Courting, Laufey, Hot Chip, and Tamino added some to an enjoyable listening week. Bought the Grouper record on Monday from last year and realized after the initial spin that I should've enjoyed it more than I did back then.
Otherwise, still continuing along the collection playthrough. A couple of new purchases from today have stalled my progress, but I will be done with the "S" titles by next week.
I mean I agree that the new Comet is not as good as Lifeforce, but it is SO INTENSE. Like early NIN ferocious. Its been a long time since I loved something that went that hard.

I'm currently in Singapore with my bf, still 5 days till I'm back home. I didn't listen to much music the recent week, this actually is my tap of the week before (September 17th to 25th).
The albums of Julia Jacklin, Rina Sawayama and Lizzo are good, but less good than their recent ones. I've enjoyed the new Suede album. The new album by Black Angels also is very good. I didn't manage to get my Q3 list finished before the trip, so I will post it mid October :)

Week 40 recap:

Breakdown
New album from Björk is absolutely amazing, she hasn't lost her touch whatsoever. Also loving the newest Boldy James project. Freddie Gibbs and Billy Woods chip in to make for a strong week of hip hop consumables. Didn't listen to too much new so other than these, spent most of my listening on the turntable...finished the "S" titles and now in the beginning of the "T" titles for the collection playthrough.

I haven't come around to listen to much music during our 2-week- trip to Singapore and have totally forgotten to create my Q3 and September Last FM chart. I'm back home now, the trip was very nice and all went well, and I'm now catching up on late Q3 releases to form my "Q3 Best of" in mid October. Just listening to Jesca Hoop's album, which is quite enjoyable. Next "My week in music" I'll post on Saturday.

Breakdown: The Hilary Hahn is as wonderful as expected. NGDB and Tyler - triple albums sure do eat up a lot of space (to be fair I am quite obsessed with the Childers). #3 should be Van Halen 1984 but stupify has (remastered) in the title and I'm too lazy to look into how to consolidate things in last.fm even though I have premium because I like all the data. The Withers is due to the CD box set that was in the walmart deep discount bargain bonanza. I think it was @MikeH who pointed it out. Just as I am and stuff Justin Hawkins has talked about on Youtube (see Van Halen) have replaced the constant Willie's Roadhouse on my ride to work.

I listened to the Metheny and the McLaughlin quite a bit, I've been on quite the Jazz kick since the new albums McCraven and Comet is Coming came out, despite three albums placing here, the grid isnt really reflective of how much jazz I've been listening to because those four track albums have to be listened to 5 times to meet the twice I listened to the Ricky Nelson.

The Aretha is good, but not GREAT - I posted in what's spinning that I am thankful she left Columbia so that we could get ARETHA instead of a continuation of this nice albums.

Ricky Nelson - I picked up three records on Cogs recently, this comp and Rick is 21 and Bright Lights and Country Music. My brother was a fan, but I never really paid attention. My father-in-law asked if I had any Nelson in the collection when he actually saw it (plus my wife proudly tells people that we have some of everything - so of course he had to hit me with something I didn't have just to call BS on her, lol. I am always telling her that we don't even scratch the surface.) Anywho, what really cause me to get them is I have been reading Waylon Jennings' Autobiography and one point he talks about stealing Nelson's guitar player, James Burton - who went on to play with Elvis until he died. This really piqued my interest, I then found out that in some ways, Nelson is as important to the whole Country Rock scene as Gram Parsons. That really got me going, so I figured a Comp, a relatively respected album, and one of the Country ones was the way to go when I found a guy who had quite a bit in his store (he sent them wrapped together in saran wrap which was interesting) and seemed to have really good feedback. These were fairly priced. I went in blind. They aren't bad. I always figured he made teeny bopper music given his idol status and hollywood background. I had no idea he was mostly rockabilly or had anything to do with fostering the Country Rock scene. So thanks brother, Father-in-Law and Waylon for putting him on my radar.

I am a little curious as to why SUNDAZED or someone hasn't reissued his entire catalog at this point. Also, this is the ideal way to discover music in my opinion, multiple recommendations and then a branch to music you already dig.

Week 41 summary

collage - 2022-10-15T045314.654.jpeg

I had won ticket for the Cavetown concert in Cologne yesterday and have listened to their releases a bit. The concert was excellent.
I'm still checking out Q3 releases and have listened to many of them this week. Marcus King was very enjoyable, also the new albums by Ezra Furman, Jesca Hoop, The Lounge Society and Djo (Thanks to @Fleetwood-Matt for recommending). Mura Masa, Beacon and Two Door Cinema Club had been solid.
The new Ozzy Osbourne, Jessie Reyez and Machine Head albums had surprised me in a positive way. Not great albums, but better than expected. Jockstrap and blackbear had been good too, but a bit too repetitive for my taste. Couldn't resist to listen a bit to DJ Khaled haha, and it's as bad as @Rip_City said (Especially the "We're the best music... Another one" is annoying as hell and destroys everything). Apart from that I've been enjoying some Prince.

The breakdown:

New obsession - two this week, In the Canyon Haze and Plains... country women rule, see #7 too. Toure and Diabate is @Ghost's fault and I love him for it. Jesup Wagon was Downbeat's album of the year last year - it's a Jazz concept album about George Washington Carver. While on vacation, I thought about working through Pitchfork's best albums of the ninties - two weeks later, I finally got around to the second album. Against me was Pitch too. Bratmobile was not my favorite. Enjoyed the Against Me - they were new to me. McCraven still getting a lot of time on the table. It only took 31 years but it seems like I'm starting to see that shape of jazz that was...

Week 42 recap:

Breakdown
Skipped last week; didn't listen to much.
Slow on new listening for now. However, of the few that I have, tried they were mostly great. Katie and Jess's Plains project is an incredibly enjoyable ride, even if you don't necessarily like country music. Both albums from Lucrecia Dalt and Andrina Bollinger are another pair of art pop releases worthy of mention. I'd recommend skipping the newest M.I.A. album, a bit of a drag.
Other than those, still running through the collection playthrough; currently in the midst of the "The" titles in the "T" section.
