Your week in music (last.fm collages...)

My week:

No one is surprised by The Beatles. The new Benjamin Clementine is choice. I’ve been in a Floyd mood (the 77 mix of Animals, Momentary and the 19 Momentary are all just outside the top 9 here), the Affinity was an effort to see what else is out there in that realm. Fields does not disappoint. The Wilson is solid if it does veer a little current Nashville for my tastes at times. GFO!!!! Hawkins is responsible for Adele (which I listened to more this week than I did all last year). My wife claimed she didn’t know who Billy Strings was after I watched a video about why bluegrass fans hate on him (spoiler alert: cause they’re dumb). She was like oh yeah as she sang along to every song, lol.

I also haven't listened to any new music apart from the Ezra Collective album which was amazing.
Apart from that I've mostly listened to Angel Olsen, Sheryl Crow and Santigold. Tom Petty and Red Hot Chili Peppers had been enjoyable vinyl spins.
Angel Olsen is due a lot of time in my grids... I recently acquired Phases, Strange Cacti and Half Way Home. They've been living in my backlog.

I usually post this while I wait for my Monday class to start but since it was canceled today I forget. Lots of spins for the challenge thread this week and lots of steams as always. Listened to my pick for ROTM sleeper agent this week, love this album and hope everyone here enjoys it. Besides that Rumours just really hit me in a fun week this week, it’s of course my favorite album of all time so I shouldn’t be surprised but every time I come back to it I appreciate something different about it. This week it was my appreciation of “The Chain” and how perfectly it captured a band in turmoil but refusing to break up

Interesting week.. There is not a new release in my top 50. Which is unusual...

Prince and Hendrix were because of new acquisitions on vinyl.

While I haven't been listening to much new music this week, there was a lot of new to me music... The Reid reflects that... I've been doing more dedicated listening (even if @Ghost didn't direct it this week.) I'm reading 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die... trying to get through a page a day (am officially two pages behind now and probably will get further behind what with John Adams having two pages and that music requiring more digestion than say Thin Lizzy) and saw that a book I had wanted to read won a Pulitzer and went digging and now I've decided to listen to all the Pultizer winning music... So Reid is the first. Much like the Adams, this is gonna need some gestation and what not.

The Withers box is my companion in my truck, so that explains Still Bill...

I finished reading Music is History and now am working through the Roots Catalog with a different set of ears than before.

Still love the Childers. Still dig the Swift even if it's not her best. I probably should do a long form post somewhere about it as I think it is a grower and is getting a bad rap given the conceit of the album.

Floyd dominates my top 50 (and is far and away the most listened to this artist this week and has climbed up a great deal in my all time ranking) due to the Animals effect... I should probably make a post in the Floyd thread about Animals (and by extension the whole catalog - although specifically the big four as it were) after spending so much time with it recently. To give y'all some scope, I listened to Animals (2018 remix) 5 times this week. The OG mix saw one (it came in at #85 - Combined they would place between Hendrix and Childers). Prince got 3 play throughs....

Week 45 recap

collage - 2022-11-12T094554.826.jpeg

I've been listening to mostly older albums this week. The Sex Pistols one is because of the mini series called "Pistols" on them which I watched this week. Revisited some Dua Lipa and Robbie Williams albums. Also some jazz records, the Ambrose Akinmusire album is pretty good. New Phoenix is light pop but solid. Also I've been listening to the first single in 10 years Patrick Wolf has put out yesterday and enjoyed that song a lot.

Breakdown
Some good albums I found. She's not present on the above chart, but Carla dal Forno's new album Come Around is a dreamy blend of Julee Cruise and Julia Holter from her Ekstasis era. Boldy James' newest is good as to be expected. Coco & Clair Clair's record is definitely for the hyperpop/GenZ crowd, yet I still enjoyed. SAULT's 11 is one of their best. Big Joanie was just OK.
Finished up spinning the "T" titles as I hoped, and onto the "U" titles. With only a few of those, I should be into the "V" albums by next update.

Lots of re-listening to albums I keep telling myself I need to spend more time with or revisit. Nosaj Thing & Nnamdi are two I still feel like I need to spend more time with. Saba, JID, Smino, and EARTHGANG keep releasing albums I love and it's been rewarding to watch them grow and expand artistically with each release. Open Mike Eagle's Hella Personal Film Festival, a favorite from him, was discussed on his Podcast Secret Skin and got queued up right after it finished. Blake and Kiwanuka are stressful day albums that help me chill out. The new Gold Panda and Mansur Brown are both really enjoyable instrumental albums worth checking out.
Aside, I love this thread and all y'alls posts showing what you're listening to and reading why. When I draw a blank on what to listen to next I often scroll through here and pick interesting album art or albums mentioned in posts to explore new to me stuff. 🍻

Well, VMP had a role in that first slot. Of course the new Billy Strings got a lot of plays. I don't know why I listened to Jimi, but then I listened to it alot. Vivid was the Pitchfork Sunday review. Duran Duran is my wife and the Rock Hall conspiring. Finally started back on the Opus. Some new Jazz and electronic and Willie round out the rest.

@NateOEB pointed out this fun thingamabob Instafest:

I'd go to that festival. Would need to bring some ghost protection.
