Week 36 recap

collage - 2022-09-10T061834.500.jpeg

I had won free admission to the Working Men's Club concert in Cologne on Thursday, which made me listen to their vinyl again too.
Had been listening to Michael Jackson albums a lot mid week. Of new releases, I'm really enjoying the new Built to Spill album, Greentea Peng and Santigold. New Röyksopp also is nice, Preoccupations is solid. Will listen to more recent releases the next days.

Breakdown
Late in posting, but this seems to catch mostly vinyl spins I've had, now that I'm in the "S" titles.
Newest from J.I.D is incredible; a lock for my top50. Same goes for Hatis Noit's Aura, a very visceral, earth-shaking, a cappela record of nearly avant-garde nature. Hoping to get back on consistent listening of new releases soon.

Decent amount of vinyl spins this week but as always it’s mainly streams. First time spending time with Bedtime Stories and I was incredibly impressed by it! I was purposely trying to have Madonna or sturgill as my number 1 but Beyoncé still prevailed lol. Cheek face is also pretty cool and definitely wanna spend more time with it

Breakdown
Late with posting, and listened to some of today's drops before using tap.
Definitely recommend the newest from Madison Cunningham if you are a singer/songwriter fan. Still rocking the new J.I.D album, it is stellar. Definitely enjoy the Santigold, Ari Lennox and Greentea Peng offerings to add to a strong R&B year. However, most disappointingly, I am not impressed with Rina Sawayama's new album much at all as it is quite generic sounding.
Playing through collection and still at the "S" titles, though noticeably slowed down this week.

Didn't come around to listen to many new releases, but will do so this upcoming week in order to create my Q3. Sudan Archives' new album is very interesting and enjoyable, as well as the new Santigold. It made me listen again to her previous albums. Apart from that I've listened to a few albums of German rock singer Herbert Grönemeyer, and to Miya Folick's new EP which is great.

All dominating though is listening to Amber Mark, who I've seen live in Cologne last night, excellent concert, lots of energy.

That Amber Mark album is amazing. And Santigold is always great.

Motown, Bowie and Beatles were the soundtrack to new kid’s first birthday party.

Madison Cunningham does not disappoint. I think GA-20 gets better with each release. Sudan Archives is always great. Santigold just missed out. Aoife got spins again because of Cunningham feature and then I was like damn this is good. Of course Country and Classical would not be denied space

Djo came through with an incredible album that I’m hooked on! Rina is really good and I will definitely spend more time with it! Besides those new releases I spent time with a lot of old favs including Weyes Blood (can’t wait for her new album!), Whitney and Carly (I can wait for her new album lol)

Week 38 recap:

Breakdown
Sudan Archives's newest album is a divinely blissful experience, one of the more unique, yet accessible, records of the year. Djo, Jesca Hoop, and Ari Lennox were all solid listens as well. Still loving the Madison Cunningham record from a few weeks ago. Tried the newest Rina album again, and I haven't changed my opinion. I would also urge avoiding the newest Mars Volta album...not that I liked them at all in the first place.
Other than that, continuing my collection playthrough; currently just past midway in the "S" titles.

I’ve been Coltrane obsessed for a minute. Vinyl pushed him to the list this week. I’m floored by the TP of Blue Train and Sun Ship has been a lot of fun to explore. I listen to Coltrane everyday when I take a walk with my daughter. We’ve been listening chronologically and are up to Ole.

I don’t actually like all the pop covers on the Miles. It feels like he wanted some of that Muzak money. The rest is fine.

Harlem Gospel Travelers have put out the feel good record of the year.

I listened to Bella Donna yesterday. Stevie released a pretty nice cover of For What It's Worth as a single (is it any different than the one on In Your Dreams??) that I checked out after getting the rhino email. So when I was like what to listen to next... You are also making me want to pull out my Madonna CDs.

That cover is really good and is what inspired me to relisten to Bella Donna again. And I always recommend pulling out some Madonna! Its crazy how consistently good she was from the 80s to the 90s and its a shame that the albums dont get enough credit in the overall music conversation

A new release heavy week for me!

McCraven and Comet have real shots at being in my best of. I have a feeling Susan Archives is a honorable mention.

I’ve been deep in the McCraven/Chicago scene rabbit hole this week. Nitty Geitty was a find at my local. Hedley was a deal tip from @Corycm and Aretha was part of the deep discount/Walmart fun. 8 & 9 are just old faves I decided to listen to this week.

Week 39 recap:

2022Week39.jpg

Breakdown
I had this saved from yesterday night, just didn't post until now.
Decent week, but only Beth Orton (who I am new to) stood out the most. Newest from The Comet is Coming is enjoyable, though not nearly as mind-bendingly amazing as Trust in the Lifeforce... was from '19. Courting, Laufey, Hot Chip, and Tamino added some to an enjoyable listening week. Bought the Grouper record on Monday from last year and realized after the initial spin that I should've enjoyed it more than I did back then.
Otherwise, still continuing along the collection playthrough. A couple of new purchases from today have stalled my progress, but I will be done with the "S" titles by next week.
