6th Annual N&G 31 Days* of Halloween (2024)

Watched this yesterday. Agree with this analysis. I saw someone describe these movies as Itchy & Scratchy violence.
My local AMC is showing 3 this week, so I am probably going to go. Need to watch 2 first.
I was really into horror until I met my wife who is not a fan, so I am starting to get back into it.

The popcorn bucket….

I both want one and don't want one lol... Itchy and scratchy violence is a perfect way to describe it. Its funny b/c its just so over the top. Speaking of which...

17) Terrifier 2 (2022) πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ¦΄

This is probably a very strong 3.5 bones. I think the movie is getting into the groove and almost has a classic horror feel to it. Almost everything is better about it than the 1st- it actually has a story this time around. The characters are better, the acting is mostly better, the clown is even funnier. My only real gripe with it is the length - 2 hours 20 minutes is way too long for it. I was getting a bit bored by the end. If it was a better pace, I would think it's super solid. Still absolutely worth a watch imo.

Film 7: Alien Resurrection (1997) πŸ’€πŸ’€.5

I know this film is cheesy but it still holds up for me weirdly.

Film 8: Alien vs. Predator (2004) πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

I distinctly remember watching this when I was a teenager and really liked it. Its been years since I re-watched it, and I know it gets a bad rep, but I still rate it!

Film 9: Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) πŸ’€πŸ’€

Ok, this one was a struggle. I read some reviews that said it was too dark to see anything, which I didn't find to be the case, but still...not great. Anyone have any idea why they stuck "Requiem" in the title??

Film 10: Prometheus (2012) πŸ’€πŸ’€.5

A decent film for the most part but I think it was let down a bit by the ending.

The ending was too long probably by about 10-15 minutes. But it was nice to get a story this go around. And boy, Sienna's mom seemed always on edge.

Not a great follow-up to the solidly entertaining initial entry. Lost the organicness of the found footage aspect.

Inexplicably adds a hint of camp factor, which is the opposite of what I think this concept's strength is. Alludes to bigger ideas behind the lore but still feels too constrained to let that lore grow.

Effective indie found footage feature that's free on YouTube. Absolutely psychotic look at toxic, terminally online influencer/content creature culture with two bros who aim to out-prank each other.

Milk & Serial has been in my bookmarks for a minute now but I haven't quite gotten to it

This one was a pleasant surprise if you can divorce it from any notion of what the Hellboy movies were before this. I've enjoyed every one of them for different reasons. But this is not even in the same wheelhouse. It's a legitimately spooky witchcraft focus and it worked for me. Watching it for a second time tonight since the wife fell asleep the first time and I'm enjoying it just as much.

Great news!

Not gonna lie, i enjoy I might enjoy this remake more than the originals.
I love the originals, but I thought this remember was great too. I was disappointed that they didn't stick with this one and keep making them. I wasn't a huge fan of Rises, at least from an Evil Dead standpoint. It was a good enough horror movie, but didn't have the vibe I was hoping for.

If you haven't seen the Ash vs. Evil Dead series, that was fantastic and the best out of the bunch!

Late Night with the Devil
[2023] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€

This was AWESOME!
When I first got my Shudder account this one caught my eye as something potentially interesting, but wasn't super high on my list of priorities. Last weekend I bumped into a neighbour who mentioned it and said they really enjoyed it, then yesterday it turned up on a list of best horror films of the 2020s so far, so needing a break from the Scream and Friday the 13th franchises I decided to give it a go last night, and hot damn do I agree with its place on that list. Presented documentary style as the lost episode of a 1977 late night talk show with behind the scenes footage during the ad breaks, the production does a bang-up job presenting this as a period piece of that era. The pacing is spectacular building to an absolutely devilish third act that is very well put together and, for me at least, was an incredibly satisfying payoff. At no time did I find it scary but it's brilliantly spooky and unsettling. Ingrid Torelli as the allegedly possessed young Lilly turns in an especially spectacular performance here; David Dastmalchian and Ian Bliss are particular highlights as well. Of the 18 movies I've watched so far this season, this is easily one of the top two. Recommended.

Blood Quantum
[2019] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ 🦴

A particularly enjoyable and bloody commentary on colonialism through an unapologetically Indigenous lens, with zombies! This has the potential to be so much better with its fresh conceit but falls victim to some particularly wooden acting and a few tired tropes. That said, even though it's not the amazing it could be it's still quite good, overall.

The birth of an entire subgenre! It's always tricky rating vintage films alongside contemporary ones given how drastically different pretty much every level of production has become over the time in between. It's hard to believe it's nearly 100 years old now. Nevertheless, this was quite enjoyable even with its poor sound, bad edits and bad acting. Bela Lugosi is fabulous despite the flatness of his character and there are a couple of instances of pretty cool cinematography.

Liked this a lot! I thought it was funny, great story and details. I love the cast - I'm also an idiot - saw that Kevin Durant was in the movie and was looking for him and was realizing that he wasn't going to be in it about midway. It turns out its Kevin Durand and it's the Elon Musk looking dude. Also I'm glad Melissa Barrera is still getting parts after Scream.
