6th Annual N&G 31 Days* of Halloween (2024)

Film 11: Alien Covenant πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

This is one of my favourites of the re-boot series. I didn't care too much for the new Alien, but the story and world building was superb.

Film 12: Bodies Bodies Bodies πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

I've watched this film a couple of times now and really enjoy it. When I first started it I thought it was going to be a stupid teen movie, but it ended up being something much more, building on peoples paranoia fantastically.

Film 14: Terrifier πŸ’€

I was disappointed by this in all honesty. I'd heard the series was worth watching but there wasn't much more to this than over the top gore, which I don't usually mind when there's something else to it (for example, Saw has the mystery, twists, etc). Has anyone watched the others and can comment on whether they are much of the same?

Film 15: The Substance πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€.5

Just finished watching this and wow....I was not ready for that ending. Wild.

Oldest and I are trying to watch Halloween/horror movies all this month. Watched Silence of the Lambs on Friday and The Boogeyman last night. Silence of the Lambs is still so damn good. The way it's shot with the conversational camera angles on the actors, Anthony Hopkins excellent acting, Buffalo Bill. So good. The Boogeyman is a 2023 movie adapted from a Stephen King short story. She wanted to watch it because she loves Sophie Thatcher. Had some good jump scares and general creepiness. Definitely felt like a Stephen King story with the creature and why it existed.

We're planning to watch The VVitch, Hereditary, Insidious, Dr. Sleep (since she's already seen The Shining), Sleepy Hollow, and if she's ready The Exorcist. She's 16 and has seen most of the classics. I was thinking maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We may watch The Crow since it's Halloween adjacent.

I've seen All Hallows Eve (the origin anthology), Terrifier, and Terrifier 2. Of the three, Terrifier 2 was easily the most amusing. None of them are entirely my thing, but there was a levity to 2 that I did enjoy. I like Art as a villain β€” nonverbal yet so emotive. Vaudevillian in a way.

T2 has a more satisfying through-line, though I will echo @zomgbear's remark that it's much too long. I'm not rushing to see T3 before it hits streaming.

For me the greatest "worth" has been the enjoyment I get out of Art's meme status.

The Black Phone
[2021] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€

Wonderfully creepy with a great screenplay and acting. I've not read Joe Hill's original short story (or anything of his yet, in fact) but this was very enjoyable. I can't say I've ever been a big Ethan Hawke fan before --didn't dislike him, I could just take him or leave him-- but between this, Moon Night, and his one episode of Reservation Dogs, I've really come to enjoy Ethan in his 50s.

I saw the #1 movie in America over the weekend.

More over the top gore, but a little more humor this go around. I am really enjoying Sienna’s arc and am anxious to see how that plays out. I believe Leone is on record saying that he doesn’t want to extend this franchise’s lifespan a la Saw, so I expect things to be wrapped up with a fourth installment. I’m also hoping that when this gets released on home media, it’s an extended cut.

I've only seen the bedroom seen from T2, which is unsettling to say the least. Are these movies just pure carnage, or are there meaningful breaks and a method to the madness? I'm good with old fashioned slashers, but even the great ones are great due to the atmosphere they've created and not necessarily only because of the kills.

There was very little "story" with the first movie, but more with 2 & 3. So yes, there are breaks and a method.

The Power
[2021] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ 🦴

Never heard of this one before; chose it at semi-random from the "A Woman's Touch" collection on Shudder. Solid slow-burn atmospheric period piece. A couple of the Shudder reviews said it was way too slow but I thought it was a great simmer; but then, I love the original versions of The Wicker Man, Get Carter and Manhunter--none of which are fast-paced. My only real complaint about this is that Val's character feels rather flat in her trauma archetype. It doesn't make the movie unenjoyable, but it had the potential to be even more powerful. The cinematography, score and pacing do a great job of applying a fairly steady tension. I would most likely watch this one again.

This is my favorite too. It felt so fresh at the time. Possibly too ahead of its time, as it was then quickly overshadowed by Scream, but good to see it getting its flowers.

Yes! I mean, obviously the original is essential for New Nightmare to even exist, but it was so refreshing. Definitely laid the groundwork for having itself overshadowed by Scream but the blurred lines of the fiction and reality alway hit just a little harder for me than the self-awareness of Scream. Mindfucky goodness!

Watched the first 2 last night, there's something to be said for a good ole' fashion throw back slasher flick. Kudos to Art's "imaginary friend" in the second one, I think she creeped me out more than Art, lol. Unless I missed something, and that is possible due to medication, they dipped their toe into the supernatural at the end of Pt. 1, didn't really expand on that in Pt. 2 outside of adding some "magic" power to our heroine, so MAYBE Pt. 3?? Either way, fun Halloween movies for sure :)
