April 2025 Spin Challenge – Well, this is puzzling…

Day 4 – Spin any artist, album or song that repeats a letter in its name or title

I Soumaoro et l'Eclipse de l'IJA - Le Tioko - Tioko

I had actually already spun a record for today. But then Amadou Bagayogo (of Amadou & Mariam) died, so playing this in memory of him. Probably my favourite albums of theirs, it's from their blind school in Mali (where they met). It's really a fabulous album, and has been recently reissued a few times. Go well, mon ami.

Day 5 - Today is 4/5 - spin a 45 or any record that is 45 rpm

The Organ "Grab That Gun & Thieves" (2004 Mint Records; reissue 2024)
Releasing only one proper studio album and a couple EP's at the height of the mid-2000's post-punk revival, the album and one EP being included on this 45rpm-cut reissue, this is a band that could have faded into obscurity despite their solid work. But their unique brand of organ-infused post-punk needed an audience and it got one when they featured on The L Word. The newly found attention made the release of this reissue possible. This all-women 5-piece band hails from Vancouver. Love their unique modernized take on post-punk. 🍁

Day 2 - It's International Guitar Month. Spin an album that includes a favorite guitarist(s) and if so inclined, tell us why they're a favorite.

Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble - Texas Flood

I saw SRV just once - as support for Huey Lewis and the News on the Sports tour. I had no idea who he was at the time, but learned pretty damn quickly.

Day 5 - Today is 4/5 - spin a 45 or any record that is 45 rpm

Inter Jazz Band - Makore Mashanu

Back to fresh grabs, and a great little record from Zimbabwe. I must admit I bought it slightly (no listing on Discogs until me) to own something on that label (clearly where Analog Africa got some inspiration). Great upbeat start to a Sunday.

Day 6 - Spin any splatter / marbled / split wax, picture disc or shaped vinyl

Destroyer "Dan's Boogie" (2025 merge)
Destroyer's new album is available on marbled wax. I'm a big fan of Vancouver's Dan Bejar. Was always particularly drawn to his vocal features with New Pornographers and love how he continues to change his sound on each new Destroyer project. This latest record does make a call-back to their Kaputt album - in the CANCON thread this week, I made comments on how the new album cover takes cues from the Kaputt cover art to highlight this. This album goes back to the loungy atmosphere of Kaputt, bringing back the saxophone on some tracks for example, but still manages to be a new take with luscious arrangements. I've been regularly spinning this all week and it may well end up being my favorite Destroyer project since that record. I say that, but I also quite enjoyed Ken, Have We met and Labyrinthitis along the way, so it's something. 🍁

Day 7 - Spin any RRHoF artist that is already inducted, or has been nominated

Rush "Grace Under Pressure" (1984 Mercury; 2015 reissue)
Inducted in 2013 with an introduction by Dave Grohl, Toronto's Rush remains one of the most striking and unique voices originating from Canada. They were prog, but heavier than the rest, with a trio of musicians that were each virtuosos in their own right. Their 80's output is often looked down upon because of the prominence of synths, but I feel it's their strongest era. The run from Permanent Waves to Power Windows is impeccable in my opinion. Those synths provide a powerful evolution in sound, and despite the fact that the songs remain complex with progressive undertones, it allowed them to manage several hits like Tom Sawyer, Spirit Of The Radio, The Analog Kid and Big Money. Grace Under Pressure is one of those strong albums from the era that I often return to. It's packed with great tracks like the hit Early Distant Warning plus Red Sector A, Afterimage, Between The Wheels and The Enemy Within. It's a pretty dark record with Peart's usual sci-fi tinged lyrics - and the underlying messages about the cold war and the holocaust remain important. 🍁
