Best Music šŸŽ¶ of 2024!

So the Tidal algorithm suggested this band "Don't Thank Me, Spank Me!" a few hours ago, I put it on to soundtrack my after-dinner walk in the neighborhood... and the algorithm totally hit it out of the park. So here I am sharing this.

So I had never heard of these guys, who are apparently out of Australia. Have they come up with you guys?

If I was going to use comparisons to describe the sound, I'd say it's a blend of the sexy funk of Janelle Monae, some harmonies reminiscent of Say She She, the punk attitude of the Go-Go's and the pop sensibilities of Olivia Newton-John. The album is varied, with funky numbers (Sandy), others that sound classic like Cindy Lee (Cover), there are guitars, horns, strings...

Anyway, here are some links:

This is what they say on their bandcamp. I think I kind of hit it bang on with my description, but coming at it from a different angle...

Their self-titled debut album packs a punch. ā€œThis album is basically a love affair between our greatest musical influences. We love girl bands from the 70s like the Runaways and the Slits for their attitude and badass-ery and girl power. We love the crass 80s pop/rock aesthetic. We love 90s RnB. We loved Britney Spears with all our hearts! And of course we couldnā€™t make an album without our parentsā€™ taste in music creeping in - you can hear some real ELO moments and Cate Ceberano themes going on.ā€

Q3 Update

Total 2024 releases (albums/EPs/mixtapes) listened to as of September 30: 60 113 175

I have arrived at the same number of favorites for this quarter as the previous ones. My favorite label dropped a release that I view as top10 in their history; Total Blue releasing a lovely ambient excursion. Electronic is quietly having a solid year.

There will be no top50 from me this year šŸ˜ Honestly, you can make an educated guess as to what my top10 for the year is as of today.

Saving (most) releases from last Friday to be considered for Q4. Entries are alphabetized by band name/artist last name.

I donā€™t know if I have just become more insular or if other genres are in a bit of a fallow period but after several years of really exploring new albums in Jazz, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Country, Metal, etcā€¦ Not much new in those genre has really inspired me. I have enjoyed a lot of the Pop singles from Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eillish and the like but I would rather listen to a playlist compiled of their best songs than spin whole album.

I'm the same way and mostly have been for some time. I really don't listen to any Pop, Hip Hop, Metal, Electronic, Country. I just don't care for it too much and "stay in my lane" so to speak. There's nothing wrong with that personally, if you know what you like, you know what you like.

I still enjoy many other genres and listen to older albums from those genres especially newer personal discoveries of stuff that I was ignorant to prior but the newer albums donā€™t do much for me. Fire example when a new Hip Hop album does pique my interest itā€™s usually something by an older artist or would be something that most would referred to as having a ā€œthrowback soundā€.

I am sure itā€™s the fact that I am in my early 40s moreso than anything specific to those genres but still I enjoy the excitement of coming across new stuff that I love and am disappointed that apparently that field has narrowed over the last few years.

Iā€™m just saying hip hop isnā€™t really for me any more I guess? Thereā€™s an occasional thing that catches my ear.

I enjoy quite a bit of every other genre these days.

Itā€™s seems to be a classical heavy year for me though. Country/folk/bluegrass and Jazz excite me quite a bit beyond that.

* = Still absorbing. I remain underwhelmed by the year at whole, normally this would be 40-50 albums deep this time of year. But I also admit not paying as close of attention as usual.
