December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

Day 21 – Wham Bang Sham-A-Lang
We've got a wham, bam shang-a-lang, and a sha-la-la-la-la-la babe.
Play something with an onomatopoeia.

Day 19 – My Sweet Lord
My sweet Lord, my Lord, my Lord. I really want to know you. Really want to go with you.
My Sweet Lord is villain Ego The Living Planet’s introduction song in Guardians Vol. 2. Play the song that would introduce you if you were a villain. Optional: what kind of villain would you be?

Melt Yourself Down – 100% Yes
20221221_153043.jpg

I reckon I'd be one of the insidiously psychological villains with some degree of mind control who would cause people to destroy their own lives from within their own minds. Something like The Purple Man but less rapey. "Crocodile" (a song about codeine addiction) could be a suitable song with its chorus, "It's a killing machine, it's sick and mean / Like a crocodile licking your carcass clean, they got ya!"

Day 20 – Come A Little Bit Closer
Then the music stopped, when I looked the café was empty. Then I heard José say "Man, you know you're in trouble plenty".
Press play and restart the music in the café. Play something you’d hear in whatever type of café you’d be in.

Tom Waits – Real Gone
20221221_153606.jpg

I know @ranbalam just played this for today's prompt, but I've had it in mind for yesterday's since they went live and contemplated a switch-up, but I decided to stick to my original plan because I really wanted to spin this Secret Santa gift again and the first time I heard any of this album was one of the first times I set foot into the cafe that wound up being my workplace and performance/promotor playground for about a decade here in Victoria. The owner was an enormous Tom Waits fan (well, he still is - but the cafe no longer exists, so he's no longer "the owner") and most of the staff were too. When we decided to buy house sound gear for the cafe we invited a bunch of local performers and threw a Tom Waits tribute show, which was such a blast and success we turned it into an annual celebration on Tom's birthday for the next 7 or 8 years - always one of my favourite nights of the year!

Day 22 – Surrender
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright. They just seem a little weird.
Play something you first heard from your parents or a relative *or* play something you introduced your children to.

I remember one of my cousins playing this when I was 9 or 10. It was right trippy...

A perfect example of why sometimes 'Greatest Hits' records are a really fine idea...

Opeth - Blackwater Park

"The Drapery Falls" is possibly my favorite Opeth song...and there are so many possible candidates. But to answer the prompt, my "villain" song would be "The Funeral Portrait," linked below.

The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop (Original Series Soundtrack)

Perhaps a Japanese-themed cafe would be my digs? The soundtrack for this timeless anime actually goes seven albums deep; but this Mondo release does feature most (ahem "The Real Folk Blues" ahem) of the essential cuts. But this song is EXACTLY an example of what I want in my go-to spot (Side 4, track 2 on the LP):

The last batch of challenges is live. Decided do add them now since the next few days look a little chaotic over here, with this weather bomb coming down. I may have to head out to my sister's for the holidays early, whenever a relatively not too bad driving window opens.

Gorillaz "Song Machine Season 1" (2020 Parlophone)
I introduced my daughter to Gorillaz when she was younger. She then took the ball away and became a fan on her own once she heard a track on Squid Games. She came to me saying that there's this track she really likes from the show and it's from a band I listen to. We figured it out relatively quickly after she started humming the song. She listens to them regularly now. I think I'm going with "The Lost Chord" for the mix. One of my favorite tracks off Song Machine.

Chicago - Chicago IX: Chicago's Greatest Hits

Neither of my parents had very discerning palettes when it came to music. My Dad has always had a soft spot for 1970s MOR Arena Rock, The Eagles, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, The Doobie Brothers etc….another of his faves was Chicago and while I have never enjoyed them enough to own one of their proper albums their first greatest hits comp gives me everything I need from Chicago.

I think I played this enough when my (now 15 year old) youngest was little that it ingrained in her brain. Since become one of her favorite bands and we've seen them in concert together a few times, love being able to share live shows with my kids. Photo is from just over a year ago with her (on the right) and her bestie on the rail for Chrvrches.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
Growing up, Johnny was always around my house. Thinking back on it, I am pretty sure my parents had both the record and 8-track at the same time. I remember my father buying a new truck with a cassette deck and then buying this for him on cassette on Christmas. He probably had it on cd later in life but I had moved out by then.

Day 15 – Lake Shore Drive
And there ain't no road just like it, anywhere I found.
Play some spaceship flying music - what’s on your stereo when you’re cruising around the stars?

Damn, I have to do some catching up! This delivering flowers and getting ready for the holidays/frozen tundra is taking up precious spinning time.

The Neville Brothers – Brother's Keeper
20221222_151942.jpg

Aaron Neville singing Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" is one of my stepdad's all-time favourite songs. I spent a lot of time scouring the suburbs of Vancouver in my early teenage years to find a copy of this album on CD for him back in the day. I think I gave him a copy of Yellow Moon, which has become my personal favourite Neville Brothers album before I finally found a copy of Brother's Keeper for him. I borrowed both CDs from him quite a bit over the following years before eventually falling even deeper and farther into New Orleans Funk a decade or so later.
