Definitive Audiophile pressings

Just made my first foray into Ella Records territory. Reached a point where I had about 7-8 records in my discogs cart, then gradually whittled it to just 1, but I'm hopeful it'll be a record I'll be happy to own. Many thanks to all the enablers out there.....

Here's one for you @MikeH ... I'll be interested to hear how this sounds when it comes out. Cut should be excellent as always. But the pressing information only says "Pressed in the USA"... that could mean anything and it's not necessarily good.

OHHHHH!!! I've wanted this for years.

Was just listening to the new stereo Blue Train. Compared it to the MMJ mono pressing, and a 1977 King Record Co. Japan stereo pressing. Have to say I prefer the stereo mix, and after listening to the new stereo pressing, the mono sounds congested, like all the instruments are stacked within the limited soundstage, competing for space. The tone Poet stereo sounds terrific, and it's not hard-panned at all. Coltrane's sax is left of center, and from left to right, the sax, piano, bass and drums each are clear and the overall effect is one of balance and spaciousness. I wouldn't say it's a particularly wide sound stage, but there's plenty of room for everything. The Japan (stereo) pressing sounds very similar in terms of spacing, but the bass and especially piano are a bit lost in the mix by comparison. The MMJ mono pressing, despite what I've said about congestion, presents all players equally well. Also have to say that all three pressings have an immediacy that's impressive, like there's absolutely nothing between the listener and the music. I don't have the Tone Poet mono, so can't comment on that one.

That Pat Garret is impressive. Brings the album to a whole other level in my opinion.

How does the MOFI stranger stack up to an RL original?

Not sure on this specific one. I only have the VMP press of this. However, consensus has been most of the Miles Mofi titles are up there with some of the best pressings. I am only missing this and Bitches Brew. All have been fantastic.

edit: just noticed you were asking about Billy, lol.
