Definitive Audiophile pressings

Alright..who has the mofi thriller and how good it is ?

I have it and it's quite excellent. But I have nothing to compare to.

See the InGroove dude's review on youtube. He compared dozens of pressings. He basically says the MOFI and the original US are the two copies to own because they are not the same. The original US is fully compressed like everything at the time but it's really well done. It's the pop-dance mix you know. He says none of the other available pressings or reissues are worth getting over this except maybe the original Japanese issue, which he says uses the same US plates (he thinks). Then he says the MOFI is the uncompressed mix and it's more open and a different experience. I can confirm the soundstage is amazing on it. Lots of details I never heard before. But maybe not as dancy as the original if you're looking for that thump. Can't say I'm missing it on my set-up though. Preference would come down to what kind of sound you like.

@mitchwagz and @Academy have it too. I'll let them chime in. @LeeVing must have received his as well.

Ingroove Mike basically nailed it. I have a NM OG but I’m really digging the detail on the MOFI.

I have this one, about which a discogs reviewer wrote a few days back: “I bought the MoFi One Step to "upgrade" from this pressing, and frankly, I like this pressing better. This is an absolutely rock solid version. This cut bumps. IMO the One Step renders with more sterility albeit with a touch more definition.” Only question I would have is how many ‘82 pressings fit the ‘OG’ category?

I have the one that does not list MJ as co-producer. I think they sound the same.

I have now listened to the MFSL Thriller DSD twice, so my impressions are based on that, but should follow through to the vinyl.

On first listen, it is astonishingly clear, crisp, detailed, with amazing depth and soundstage. It is truly 'audiophile' and may set a new standard at audio shows as a demo disc.

On second listen, it really does reveal it's 80's origin, as the dated synths and drum machines really stand out in all their artificial glory.

But on reflection, my problem is really this. It's clean, squeaky clean. BG's original mastering had the dirt. It had an edge, that is gone here.

Thriller should not be a clean, mellow, 'nice' audiophile record. It should rock. The MFSL doesn't, and for all the detail, separation and depth, it shows the elements in sharp focus rather than as a whole that makes you want to get up and danced - sonics be damned.

The baby tiger, defanged.

Well said… it sounds amazing. If you want to scold it for not being as thumpy, pick up another copy. But it’s an audiophile reissue, and it succeeded in that - in my mind.

FWIW - I also have this copy which is cheap and sounds really nice. I intend to keep it for the danci-ness 😎.

Probably not a definitive audiophile because it’s a 200s recording but the Doves Kingdom of Rust repress is every bit as nice as the the represses of their first 3 albums a few years back. Happy to have it.

Weirdly no idea how to figure out where it’s pressed. Very minimal deadwax etchings, just catalog no and the side. It feels like and optimal but no way of verifying that!

Hmmm cogs people strongly disagree with me 😂

Maybe I’ll listen to it again when I’m not falling asleep on my feet…

I don't even see it up for sale anywhere. Was gonna get it but maybe I'll wait...

It was only for sale direct from universal stores like UDiscover/sound of vinyl and the band. I waited until it was released last week before I ordered it because I asked my local said it didn’t look like it was being released to normal stores.

I’ll sit down at some point over the weekend and give it and the cd a listen back to back, my memory was that it didn’t sound fantastic digitally to begin with tbh so it might just be a case of source limitations.

Your new cd rig might just change your opinion. 😎
