Definitive Audiophile pressings

Got my Bill Withers order from Music Direct but there packaging is poor, all 4 records have dinked corners. I'm yet to open them & listen to them

OTOH Music Direct is making some questionable calls. I have had some super boxed orders and one that made it but like yours should have been better given the premium contents.

Then they held back a stack of Miles Jack Johnson MoFi LPs and sold the now sold out title at 2x retail. I bought one but it didn’t sit to well.

Most recently I bought the just going out of print MoFi Ry Cooders Boomer’s Story and Paradise & Lunch. Both were in stock at retail price when I ordered. They texted and said they were sold out of Paradise & Lunch and it was out of print. 10 days later and they have stock at $100 a pop. 😠

I found one somewhere else at retail. Hoping it shows undamaged.

I should really post these in fresh grabs, but it felt like an Audiophile post. In addition to the dinked package of MoFi & AP's form Music Direct I had 3 other deliveries today.

The KG T-Rex, again some seem split and & mark on the back (I've not had the best of packaging luck this week), the John Lee Hooker KG. And finally received the 2 Jimi (QRP) Family edition presses I got after seeing weeks of recommendations on this thread. Just got 'Are you experienced' & 'Ladyland' for the moment. I wanted Axis, but wasn't available. Yet to spin any but the T-Rex & Ladyland look like the whole package, mastering, pressing & great sleeves. Very impressed for the price, why aren't all records like this.

Are the Hendrix from Amazon?

Wow, flipping their own records is bad enough but cancelling orders to do it is absolutely disgusting.

Agreed. I’m sure the CS rep just followed what his computer said but this is what happens when management decides to start holding back stock to become the internet’s most well connected record flipper.

MD is in a unique position to know exactly when a MoFi title will be sold out. And they likely know exactly how many copies they will be getting out of the last batch. Given the size of the company I find it hard to believe the extra short term profit is worth the loss of customer goodwill by flipping their own titles.

I have always felt Music Direct was a top notch internet source but if this keeps up I may reconsider.

That’s crazy. I’d write them and make a stink about your cancelled order. That’s screwed up.

it’s annoying enough that they sell their last few copies of albums for 2x retail or more but cancelling is a new level of screwed up.

I got Withers Live and Johnny Cash (cash was from MoFi and Withers was MD). Both were packed well and no damage. I do think it’s because they only sent one per box. I always have issues with retailers when I order 4+ in a box. I think AS are the only ones I don’t really have issues with when getting larger orders in. All three send via FedEx to me though.

Yeah, they know I didn’t appreciate seeing the item they had just canceled as “unavailable out-of-stock sold out” back on the site at an almost 3x markup.

Audiophile vinyl is heavy. Ideally the shipping boxes with multiple items should always have the rolled ends so a hard drop doesn’t ding corners on 3 or four $50 album covers. (Another reason I really like Plaidroom. They consistently over pack to minimize the chance of corner damage and seam splits.)

Yep. They remain my favorite shop to order from. Just grabbed Aaron Frazer from them. Usually I’ll add one or two extra titles in when I want one item but they have been sold out of a lot lately! Glad they are doing well business-wise it seems.

For the In Rainbows, you will want one of these. 👌

There's an unplayed DISCBOX In Rainbows for 145 EUR shipped to US. I want to pull the trigger but feels too expensive. Thoughts?

EDIT:
My ask is to those who have shopped for this in the past. Do they think this is reasonable? I've only been looking for a couple weeks.

I gotta look at it this way... How much do you love this album? Do you love it so much that you would pay that much for what is basically an Analogue Productions 2 LP 45 RPM pressing of it in a box set? I think I paid about $135 CAD for mine which was about how high I was willing to go, and I don't regret it one bit. HOWEVER, these are not uniformly well pressed. And there are many "whooshy" copies out there. There are others that have noise on Faust Arp, so if you do pull the trigger and it's truly unplayed, best make sure you can return it if it's a bad copy.

If I didn't already have it, I would seriously consider it. Plus it seems it's starting to go up in price too...

It's one of my Top 10 albums probably. But it's coming from EU, so I doubt a return is a possibility. And even if it is, I would have to pay ~$35 to ship it back.

Thinking thinking thinking

Looking over the most recent sales prices on Discogs and this sounds like the going rate. I purchased my copy a couple years ago for around $80 from my LRS and that was more than I would normally spend on a single album. That being said it does sound phenomenal and if it’s an album you love it might be worth it.

I think you’re right. I looked at the video, they place a square of card on top of the records in the video, which they didn’t have in my box. I think whoever packs thinks of it as a spacer & they don’t need that if there are plenty of records, but that lessens the rigidity of the box as a whole.

I got a message on the warped record saying I would need to return it to America and order something else. I’m nit sure it’s worth it, means I will have paid for the record and 2 lots of transatlantic shipping

On the dings, I’m not sure. They have said they don’t have replacement sleeves, but now I’m in contact with someone they have asked for photos. I’ll see what they can do.

Tough call...there’s one on discogs that is $175 shipped from Canada that is make an offer. Could always try to offer $150 shipped or something and if not buy the other one.

I looked for close to a year. Bought one back in September and just looked it up—mine was $130 shipped from an eBay auction. It does seem that they are getting harder to find. You could take a gamble and wait and search a lot but I’d think at best you would save $20-30.

@Mather Did you get any response on the Bowie Legacy question? My home office is in the room with all my vinyl & just spotted it. I could give it spin this evening if your still thinking about which version to get
