Definitive Audiophile pressings

@Joe Mac - Is it bad that I’d rather come to my parents instead of my apartment because the vinyl is still at home! 😂😂😂

I’m planning on building a new kallax in my room but I don’t know how I’m going to move a lot of my records...😳

And.....I kind of don’t want to move my turntable system as I really like laying in the bed in my room and just spinning records. This new apartment I’ve just moved into doesn’t feel like home yet...🥺

I always laugh at how good the original pressing of New York sounds on vinyl despite it being about an hour long. DMM at Masterdisk, Bob Ludwig mastered.
For Lou Reed "New York" in the US, it looks like there are a few different pressings from 1989 (Allied and Specialty Records seem like the main two). Do you have either of these that you'd recommend? I'm not familiar enough w/ the various pressing plants to know whether Allied or SRC or another version would be expected to be better (or the best). Thx

Yeah but... high end AUDIOPHILE boring.

Like... a boring you can drink expensive scotch to while discussing music, and how it sucks now...
People could use it as a high cost, modern alternative to dipping their kids dummies/ pacifiers in whisky to help send them off to sleep.

I got the double of that cheap, just because it was touted as audiophile & wanted to see how my system could sound. I don't think I've ever actually listened to it .

What would be great is the Dylan unplugged, I got that on CD when it came out & used to really like it, a nice 'audiophile' cut of that would be great

The benefit of vinyl as a mechanism to play Clapton is that the inherent vulnerabilities in the format means you'll probably end up with the odd click or pop to distract you from how utterly boring the music is. You lose that advantage when you start shopping for high end audiophile Clapton so are just left with the absolute tedium.

I know someone said you could get an early pressing for cheap but it’s just not true...I’ve never seen one in the wild and discogs is $45+ at least. For that price I could grab the reissue in a sale

The re issue is great by the way. I read somewhere it's the 16.44 files from the CD but I think it sounds fantastic. Nice packaging too

Transformer and New York are my two favorites. Berlin is pretty essential as well!
I'll add Coney Island Baby is spectacular.
Once you have committed to the rabbit hole (and hey, why not), jump head first into Take No Prisoners, the 1978 live album recorded at the Bottom Line in NY. It's a singular expression of a unique time, place, very NY, and very Lou Reed in all that made him spectacular, at times a cantankerous asshole, and, well, NY

Seems like it goes for $20-$30 on eBay pretty regularly.

How do you all find the MoFi pressing for Weezer’s self-titled (Blue Album)? I see mostly good reviews on it but some of them are mixed? Do you think the MoFi pressing for Weezer’s debut sounds great?

It’s good, very similar quality to the VMP Pinkerton that was actually pressed using MoFi’s plates. But it’s also Weezer, it’s hardly lush, complex music that shows off the full potential of that whole remaster voodoo.

Not that I’ve seen...I just stopped looking because most were selling for $40-$50 shipped last I checked and in my mind I’d just wait for the reissue to drop slightly in price.

edit: annoyingly enough if I look at popsike, it seems every time I was looking for it, it sold at 40-60 and when I gave up the cheaper copies sold haha

I’m guessing you recommend the MoFi pressing then and you’re saying it’s kind of the best it could have sounded on vinyl as the album isn’t lush? Also, what is remaster voodoo? I think I get your last sentence but just want to clarify! :)

When I say regularly goes for, I mean looking at the sold prices. In my experience, the best way to get a decent deal on used vinyl (when you can't count on any stores for that, like me) is to set up a search on eBay and check it daily. Not great for instant gratification buying, but you can almost always beat discogs prices if you're willing to wait a few weeks.

I’m saying if you really like weezer a lot buy the mofi. If you are a casual fan just buy a normal copy, weezer are not a band that are going to benefit as much from a mofi as an artist who has a lush or complex sound.

Remaster voodoo was me throwing some shade on the ridiculous descriptions they all give their processes.

Just looked at a couple of the 18 original 1989 presses listed on cogs as well and the U.K. release in particular has tonnes on offer and none for silly money.

Yea annoyingly looking at the sale dates on popsike, the spikes seemed to be when I looked then I gave up.

I have a bunch of eBay searches saved but I’m already at my self-imposed quota. If I saved them for every album I want, I’d be broke!

Or ask your mam and dad to get it for you for Christmas like all self respecting 40 year old men do...

Although the tag that was on the parcel implied it was the dog who had bought it for me 😂
