Definitive Audiophile pressings

Hoping I'm not beating a dead horse, used the search function but I don't think it's been brought up since August:

American Idiot One Step

Absolutely love Levi Black Belt's cuts. This'll no doubt be a stunner, but dunno if I'm paying over a hundred bucks for one.

In the search, I found unbeknownst to me that Ted Jensen remastered to hi res digital in 2012, which is what they used for the 20th anniversary box set, and wow, it's like a whole new listen.
Apparently I haven't listened to this album since prior to then, because the original digital mastering was absolutely abhorrent. Height of the brutalness in CD land.

Assuming Levi's cut will be from those 192 "flat" files that Ted Jensen did his master from, and not from Ted's remaster.

In the One Step description, it says the album was "recorded in the digital domain and mixed to analog tape" which doesn't make any sense....
I would have trouble even buying the vinyl with just a hi-res file master.
It's an odd approach for a one step premium.

Say what you will, they sound fantastic........it's all about the mastering, Kudos Levi 👍
Levi IMO is achieving stuff from digital cuts that you cannot get from an analog cut - he's managing to get more out of the further lo and hi frequencies that are typically just filtered out for vinyl, and it's translating amazingly. It's all about the context of the music and how it was recorded. It's honestly kind of unbelievable that I don't see his name on more stuff right now, but I think he's picking up steam.

He and Joe Nino-Hernes are honestly pioneers in vinyl mastering in my book. Bookmark this post! 😂

@Jbraswell, would love for you to check out the Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World that Levi cut and let us know what you think. I think that may be his finest work to date.

I'll keep an eye out for that one.

I tried to get one of the Levi Metallica cuts from the Target sale.
Ended up with the CB Pallas Ride The Lightning.

Can't go wrong with that! My only splitting hairs complaint about CB is that he tends to let a vocal sibilant slip a few times on each cut. He cuts hot with a lot of top end so that it translates to a really lively, exciting listen, but that's the line you ride with that push he gives to the upper mids!

I wonder how much the band plays into this.
I've heard him politely complain about the Van Halen cuts.
Stating Eddie wouldn't let him give it proper bass because he wanted the lead guitar to dominate the front of the sound.

Haha yes I heard him say that as well! Client to client. Some will literally attend the sessions if you're EVH level, or send a trusted set of ears to attend in the case of Neil when CB started doing is catalog. Some will just say do what you do!
