Definitive Audiophile pressings

How do y'all feel about buying usually high priced items at a steep discount just because of damaged sleeves? Do you still buy it if the disc is VG+ or NM?

I don't usually filter for NM sleeves on Cogs, a lot of my Cogs purchases have been listed as VG+ sleeves. I don't mind minor damage, the problem is what each one of us consider "minor". I'm not expecting older albums to be perfect, newer albums I don't mind a dinged corner or small crease, and of course it depends on the album.

If it's pricey and lists any kind of damage, I'm asking for pics.

I guess my question is more about something like a $200 MoFi album being listed at $40 because there's a seam split. But disc is in great shape. Does that put you off from buying it?

I have a higher tolerance for seem splits depending on how bad they are. A simple split, regardless of how long it might be can be repaired. But I've had pics sent of "seam" splits that look like someone tried opening the album from that side not realizing there's an actual open end to a jacket, lol. If it's not all freyed and mangled I can live with it, again, I would look at it as a "can I fix it" with like Seamzeazy's.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on something but the packaging is definitely beyond repair. But it's also about 50-60% off the price of any other copies out there and the discs have never been played...decisions decisions!

Do you buy it for the eventual value you could get if you happen to re-sell it? Or you just want to enjoy the music of a NM copy?
I don't think you mentioned the title btw (or it is intentional, just don't want to be scooped on that offer?)

I'm being a bit purposefully vague on the title haha. It's an auction that ends today. I'll probably go for it depending on what the final price ends up being. I figure that even if I end up wanting a nicer copy of it later, I could always just resell this and make my money back and then some.

IMO, if vinyl is clean, I spring. Sleeve doesn’t bother me as much if it’s damaged a bit

I'm definitely on this team -- but also, I'm one of those that throws aways the inserts and doesn't sleeve 90% of my records. It "might" bother my some if I was buying an OG with an iconic sleeve and therefore the historical value or relationship to the release is tied up to the sleeve -- but that would be getting pretty abstract and really apply only if I was "collecting." For a remaster or recent RP? I think it's just closer to nice cardboard and a poster. (e.g. it fundamentally separate from the original art and is simply nice packaging...)

I have a standard black vinyl of that. Excellent comp.
I'm pretty continuously surprised by the quality of some of the Walmart and Target pressings. Walmart tends to get a bunch of Bellman cuts pressed at pretty good plants.

Give me a steep enough discount and I'll buy nearly anything I have interest in even if the sleeve is barely functional or non existent. Don't get me wrong, needs to be a pretty big discount, but ultimately the music matters to me more than the sleeve and I think a lot of buyers are less finicky on sleeve condition than may be thought.

Dear Everyone who is cool with sleeve issues,

Teach me your ways. I wish to be like you.
