Definitive Audiophile pressings

Anyone have/heard the Ryo Fukui Scenery 2018 Half Speed master btw, comments ?
Thank you
The trendiness of this album boggles my mind. I am glad lots of people enjoy it but can’t say the heavy infatuation makes a whole lot of sense to me. I mean it’s pleasant enough, but the love shown around some parts of the internet is puzzling, I feel like I am missing something.

Mental note: TenderLovingKiller does not appreciate the Scenery or enjoy Mellow Dreams.

I feel like I appreciate it the appropriate amount. It’s relaxing and pleasant and sometimes that is all someone is looking for in a jazz record. Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube in particular I’ve seen many folks fawning over this album as though it’s second coming of Sunday At The Village Vanguard or something.

I am just feeling a bit disconnected is all. Seeing if there was something profound or nuanced I was missing since I am hardly a Jazz buff and I value N&G’s opinions on such things.

it's right up there with the best Evans trio's for me. Just never had it on wax. Until now! evil laugh. Got a below median NM copy, doesn't happen often these days.

I really like Scenery. I wouldn’t compare it to Bill Evans at all due being less chill and lyrical generally (although it certainly has its chill and lyrical moments, particularly last track — Scenery). I have the Project Re:Vinyl version, and it sounds amazing but is obvs more pricey than the WRJ. https://www.discogs.com/release/10359904-福居良-Scenery

The JP mastering is really solid on this '69 cut.
Sounds less exact than my 2020 remaster but has all the dynamics and better fidelity.
Maybe the the 2020 is cut from digital.

I’m pretty sure if there is a 2020 that it will be the same master that Page did circa 2014. That was done from digital and the bitter prat pushed JPJ, Plant and Bonham right back in the mix.

Reviews on cogs put this right up there with the RL cut.

I am just jones'ing at having a LZ II 1st pressing.

ooh, I wasn't comparing the playing or music to Evans, I'm not into that angle of music tbh. Just that it's up there as one of my personal favorites along with Evans, Hampton Hawes, Herbie Nichols, Red Garland, Oscar Peterson, etc.

Another great series to look at for Japanese Jazz is Spiritual Jazz 8 Part I and II. Although I think the prices may be a little silly on those ones now. You may already have them too. But I enjoy them.
I have some Three Blind Mice and J Jazz Deep Modern Jazz From Japan. @MikeH mentioned those J Jazz sets are about coming up for repress.

Oh if they're up for repress then definitely check those two out. Really nice packaging and a good mix of more traditional stuff and also stylistically Eastern stuff using a mix of traditional Japanese instruments etc...

Another one out of the package. VG+

1973 JP release
Some scratches affecting playback.

The music is magic.
Haven't A/B with 2016 copy but it sounds a lot more organic and just floating musical at first glance.

Listening to Money.
Absolutely stellar music on this record.
The right channel has it's own show going on with the guitar notes.

I Really like the fact this is a first pressing but it falls pretty far short of the advertised VG+.

I've reached out to RCJP regarding the LZ PG and this one. We'll see how it goes.

one of my locals has a Vol 3 left. I have sampled it online and just not sure it's worth having on Lp over streaming tbh. I like Vol 1&2.
I bought these on CD bc I wanted the booklets, which are informative and good. I decided that, for tracks/bands that I really like, I‘d buy individual albums on vinyl when available. It’s worked well so far, and I do think the info in the booklets adds value, although I’m sure all the info in them can be cobbled together w internet searches.

I have this pressing. It’s good. Doubt it’s better than the RL though. And I think the AMJYs are the best reissues I have heard (haven’t heard the classic pressings though)
