Definitive Audiophile pressings

I don’t live in America. The dollar is crazy strong right now so I can’t really justify anything from there in the forseeable.

So no MoFi in your collection anymore then, interesting…
Because everything at mofi is cut half speed ☺️
We mentioned one release from 79?

The belief is that the majority, if not all, done on their current gain2 system are half speed. For sure the majority done by Stan Ricker back in the late 70s and early 80s, including all the Beatles ones, were too.
There are blurbs out there from Mofi Customer Service confirming they ditched half speed in ~2013.
Everything prior was probably half speed.

Yea —all the Stan Ricker stuff is definitely half speed. Not sure about newer stuff. But those old MoFis sound excellent. Probably more to do with Ricker being a talented engineer than half speed though. Any technology in the hands of the wrong person can sound bad.

Don’t disagree with KG or BG though in that it does seem gimmicky to me and I don’t know that it sounds any better than if they hadn’t done half speed on those MoFis.

I think it’s pretty absurd to just outright ignore them either, I have so many that were done that way that sound magnificent. It’s one of those things that, as with everything, it pays to use your ears and the accumulation of knowledge on a place like this rather than jumping one way or another because this engineer said this or that other engineer said the other. They’re all going to prefer their own method. I’m definitely not going to pay to import a US OG of something with current exchange and shipping rates when these are relatively cheap and, as has been covered, The Who were more on the stones end when it came to recording practices.

Yes mastering eng makes all the difference.
They both explained very clearly there are sacrifices in sound that "half" to be made in order to cut at half speed.
It translated to me basically saying you lose fidelity and quality for a process that is sub par.

Half speeds can sound good but if you put it next to a AAA cut at full speed, I heard a considerable difference.
At least with some ELO records I have.

Here's the Bernie recent interview.
Why they picked a noisy record store is not registering for me but nonetheless @ 35 mins in, you can hear it from the horses mouth.

You guys I've been drinking at the cottage for like 10 hours and a NM 78 Zep 4 showed up on Ella Records and I had an anomalous moment of pause and in that moment some absolute BASTARDO bought it and if I see a 78 Zep 4 JP press show up on the What's Spinning thread I WILL FIND YOU

LOL, I think that's the one I bought a few days ago.

EDIT: The one I got was a nm-/nm- 1976 though

On second glance yep, it was you. Lemme know how it sounds, especially compared to the recent remaster if you have it.

I knew I should have shut the hell up about that store. I only have myself to blame.

I do have the recent remaster and I don't like it. It's already in the sale box I need to take to my local when I have a chance. I should still have it around when this arrives so I'll do the a/b.

I'm away in a week, so the store's all yours again. ;) I'm still looking for LZI and II so go fast on those if you see suitable copies. Otherwise, I'm not sure we're overlapping that much in the end, so we should be good I think.

Uh, there's a NM NM II on there right now brozinski. GO GET IT.

But for reals, I'm just kidding, we just happen to be looking for the same stuff right now, I'm very eager to hear your thoughts vs the remaster. I have the Mothership box set second pressing which is supposed to be the same masters as the individual album remasters, however I've compared them to a friend's copy and the box set doesn't sound nearly as good. So not sure what's up with that but I think I gotta get some of the individual ones.

Oh shit there is.... I'm worried about buying anything right now in case it takes a little too long to get to me though (because I'm away in a week). Probably would be ok considering them though. Damn. No I shouldn't just in case. I feel like Gollum/Smeagol right now.

Due to Walmart's incompetence I ended up getting the Van Halen boxset for free. I've never been much of a fan, but on the third album and these pressings are fantastic. While I'm sure the One Steps will be even better, if you want to save a hell of a lot of money I don't think you'd be disappointed with this set.
