Definitive Audiophile pressings

You go to Ella right? Ella, Face Records and Record City have all been solid for me. I actually find I don't buy many japanese albums right now because to justify shipping I need to find more than 3 albums in stock at once at the same place. haven't found too much stuff I really want all in stock at once.
That is my problem as well. Shipping to Canada is best with 3 records but usually can only find 1 I really want in the condition I want.

Never tried Face before but might give them a try. They come up when I am digging in Discogs.

It's helped that I've wanted older records that aren't in high demand, so I've gotten a bunch of my NM japanese pressings from RCJP for around $5 each. The problem is then I buy 10-20 of them at a time to justify shipping costs, and have no more space as a result. There aren't many I'm looking for anymore, so just keeping eyes out for specific ones that rarely pop up now. But I love my collection and even if I didn't buy anymore it would keep me happy for years. The hunt is the fun part though. I could give up ever doing a pre-order again.

I check out RCJ’s daily listings. When I see something interesting, I pop it in my cart and just leave it there. If it sells, it sells, but over time, titles accumulate until I see something I really want, which I figure won’t last, and then the game is afoot figuring out which ones/how many will hit the shipping groovy spot. Right now I have two EX/VG+/VG+ Steely Dan (sorry @Mather) early pressings, a Curtis Fuller title, and a couple of those very inexpensive older records @Hemotep mentioned on their way.

Ok, this is about cds not audiophile vinyl, but I thought a few of you might want to go down these rabbit holes. I was on another site when someone linked to this article on the Best cd version of Bryter Layter. He titles his write ups "Best Version Of..." He also touches on the streaming versions as well.

I really enjoyed the Bryter Layter and I am starting to read What's Going On

Very cool! Gotta read some of these. I’ve been trying to rip CDs to Roon a bunch (or download them) and sometimes have trouble deciding which CD is the one to seek out.

@Mather —look away. Saw this posted elsewhere:

Can’t seem to find the post on SHF anymore though
Hmmm, I wish the UHQRs were 33rpm, not 45. I don’t mind 45s, I just don’t think they’d sound that much better than a 33 UHQR, and also wonder if they’d be significantly better than the standard 180g 45s. I’d likely opt for the non-UHQRs, I imagine they’d be no more than $60-70.

I wish any of these were in audiophile 33 rpm. I'm getting exhausted by the idea of a complete discography at $150 a pop or the discounted option being $60-70.

I may be alone here, but has anyone been somewhat exhausted by the last few months of audiophile talk, on top of the cost of things these days? Recently I’ve been going through my collection and found so many treasures from over the years that I almost forgot about. Sure, I always enjoy a great sounding record, but what really got me into collecting was discovering new music. And there’s so much older stuff that already sounds great.

I feel like over these last few years there’s been so many reissues of the same stuff, at higher costs, and almost like a race to collect all these audiophile releases as fast as possible before they skyrocket. Most of it is excellent, but part of me feels exhausted by it all. This recent MoFi shenanigans and the cost of audiophile records (or even most new records) really has me going back to collecting to search for great older presses in the wild or new music in local shops and whatnot. In a way, it almost became too easy to buy the best of the best online.

That’s the end of my rant, but felt like this was the only place where someone may relate. My wife could care less!

I look at birthdays in music every day. It's almost always a trigger for me to pull out something from the collection I haven't listened to in a while...and it's always a rewarding experience.

You can never quite fully capture that excitement you had when you heard an impactful record for the first time, but you can come pretty damn close when you haven't listened for a while.

Music rediscovery is so satisfying and so underrated.

I know im flogging a dead horse here but a record just arrived from Gearbox (an older release, 2014) and thought you guys and girls might appreciate the sticker on the front.

THIS is the kind of clarity I think everyone expects. Honest overview with no excuses if digital is the only way forward, just a reasonable explanation.

Intervention does a similar thing with their release details. Hoping that the MoFi stuff at least causes more companies to be more transparent.

The most interesting part of the MoFi "scandal" is that there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to which pressings of theirs sound best based on what the sources are. Some of the best sounding MoFis came from DSD64. Some of their worst sounding cuts were AAA. I'm hoping that this at least will make more people think that digital sources aren't some kind of audiophile boogeyman anymore. Based on comments on reddit/some FB groups though, not sure that's what most people have taken away from it. Lots of comments about MoFi putting SACDs on vinyl or people saying that since they used DSD they could have made limitless amounts of records.

LOL. These people haven't got a clue, but have an internet connection, so feel a need to post their uninformed opinions and misinformation.

They don't put an SACD on vinyl. Different medium, different mastering, and SACD is limited to DSD64, while they can use up to DSD256 for vinyl.

And limitations on pressing quantity have nothing to do with source, they are purely self-imposed to drive up prices.

Perhaps the best outcome of this whole MOFI matter is that it might take the steam out of $150 limited edition 45 rpm bullshit.

It was not so long ago that Cisco put out a magnificent, definitive Aja at 33rpm that went for $35. The original Classic KOB 45rpm went for $50, now being repressed for $150.

Anyone else notice that MOFI and Chad have, like, zero interest in putting out hardly anything at 33rpm, and at the going price ($35 or $39 depending) - just pumping out the cash grabs at $150?
