Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

What's on the other side of the room, where you're standing while taking the picture?

Now standing in the kitchen. Place is 1200 square feet. The pets apologize for their toys being all over the floor.

Also, fish tank isn't mine (nor the funcos) If interest rates ever lower or I get a promotion before AI takes all of our jobs, I'll be able to go without the roommate.

Can you wall mount a small satellite centre above the tv and then use the swing mount to bring the tv down for viewing? The extra height on the centre shouldn't really affect the sound in terms of voice placement...

Alternately, can you wall mount the TV and instead of a swing arm mount can you get one that allows you to tilt the tv down towards your seating area so it's angled down at you.. Likely a cheaper mount than the arm.

I guess that is the other option- putting through center channel above the TV. That's probably about 75" high though. Don't think the sound quality would be great when you're sitting on the couch.

If the centre and the tv are both on mounts that allow you to angle them downwards towards the couch then I highly doubt you would have issues with sound.
This was typically the solution for such situations back in the early-mid 2000s. You'd put a shelf above the TV and use something like Auralex MoPads to try to angle the centre down toward your head at the listening position.

So is it your recommendation too? I've been shocked at how stumped my dad has been. He's holding firm to just add a speakers stand in front of the fireplace.

Oops. Currently doped up on Nyquil. Was at the (great) concert and realized I've definitely caught a cold from my company's quarterly gathering. Felt guilty I was unmasked by the end.

Anything projected there would still be too high. Especially if you're accounting for a center channel. And then you are adding another piece of equipment on the other side of the room.

Love the outside the box thinking though. @SnowmaNick also suggested building a shelf inside the fireplace which I can't get out of my head. If the speaker weren't completely inside, that might work. But it would cost decent $ to safely take apart while simultaneously hurting the property value. Which makes it a no-go.
Well the thing is, you can mount a projector screen that comes down ahead of the fireplace an inch of two, it would clear the fire place and you're talking about a 100 inch screen, I don't think you'd be dealing with any sort of viewing issues with the projection being too high! Could throw a shelf right above the couch and it would line up pretty nicely I think.

But yes if you're in love with OLED displays than it might be a dealbreaker!

I'm a projector stan, I adore them even still having an entry level projector!

Projector tech has come a long way. With a quality screen they look really good.

So the problem I'm encountering is that the mantle is 22". Mantle mounts only clear 18" for whatever reason. And they are the only brands allowing for heavy vertical drops.

My only option may be a Sanus 4D shift which would allow be to install the mount at the top of the mantle, extend it out and then drop 6 inches. $400. And then the speaker would go right above that.

So projectors, to my knowledge, still struggle with HDR which impacts the visual quality of any 4k- especially physical. They also don't have a great refresh rate which is a problem for video games.

Also, if the screen is dropping from the ceiling, it would block the speakers, wouldn't it?

Hmmm, it might block center channel but your stand mounts would be fine I imagine but maybe that defeats the entire point!

As for video games, I haven’t noticed anything that deters my enjoyment of them! I mainly play challenging single player games though and don’t do competitive multiplayer anymore so maybe it’s in that arena where you would notice some short comings from refresh rate and input lag? I do know there are some gaming oriented projectors though.

As for the 4K stuff yeah you got me stumped there, but the longer I’ve had a projector the less I’ve actually cared about that stuff, Idek what 4K is, does, or adds to the experience. Something about a projectors sharpness and lack of hyper definition is a comfort for me!

Just adding my two cents in case you don’t wanna have to frankenstein something to make the TV work but still want a kickass cinema experience!

Modern projectors can go up to 120hz and higher refresh rate and also include HDR however no in terms of max nits they can't come close to a OLED in that respect. That being said I play a lot of games and I don't miss anything with my PS5 or Series X using a projector.

That's a picture of my projector showing Game of Thrones taken from my couch with my phone. And it's not even the best quality because that was compressed for upload.

I would not say recommendation, no. It’s going to be an unattractive, imperfect solution. But it’s an option. Frankly, were it me, I would rearrange the room so that I could optimize my speakers as much as possible and have that OLED hung so its centre hit eye-level.

If you want to keep the screen at the fireplace, as well as improve aesthetics and audio performance, @Ghost’s idea is the way to go. Just get an acoustically transparent screen so that placing speakers behind it won’t matter. All the necessary kit will be costly, though.

120FPS should be fine unless you are playing competitive shooters at a high level.

Sorry, I can’t offer a guaranteed win here, but surround sound is difficult to implement with rhe fireplace in play. Hopefully, wherever you place the centre, your AVR’s room correction will help get the sound to be pleasing.

I think I've decided to bring the TV forward with a mount, possible tilt and then to mount the center speaker towards the top of the mantle. That will at least maximize the audio.

There simply wouldn't be enough seating if I flip everything to the other side.

If projectors ever get to the point where I'm not sacrificing HDR, I'll definitely consider that route instead of getting a bigger OLED. But for now, I'm in love with the color and lighting that OLED provide.

I appreciate everyone's input and will come through with an update when everything's done.

Oddball thought, have you considered just running a phantom center (4.0/4.1)? At least try it and see how much you need the center, and if you don’t then all this is just hand wringing due to the “normal” setup convention. Plus, it’s free to try.
