I finished my umbrella only run of Death's Door this weekend. The hardest part of that whole run is dealing with the low damage and weaker magic until you get the upgraded fire attack. The DoT from that upgrade makes things much easier. The final boss also gave me some trouble, it seemed like they were more resistant to magic than other enemies, or just had a lot more health. Not too difficult though.
I then started playing Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labrynth. I'm having a great time with this one. I'm not familiar with the media surrounding this, so the story doesn't make much sense, but the gameplay is on point. It's heavily inspired by Symphony of the Night, with some unique mechanics. For starters, you get a bow and magic very early on, and you can swap spells/items on the fly through holding the button and scrolling though a menu wheel. There's a wide range of weapons and bows. No need to go into the pause menu, which is nice. Spells are pretty powerful and have been the deciding factor in a few boss fights. The game also uses a mechanic in which you have an air and fire form, and you can switch between the two on the fly. That part reminds me a bit of Guacamelee, but it has an added element. Each form has a meter, and killing enemies and dealing boss damage fills the meter of the other form. There are 3 levels for each, and increased levels increase damage. Level 3 also adds a slow healing effect, so managing these forms comes into play heavily, especially in boss fights and lengthier combat areas. There are moves and door switches that gate off progress like other Metroidvanias, but each new unlock only requires a small amount of backtracking, usually 1-3 areas at most. The warp areas are placed very well, making backtracking quick work. I think my only real complaint with this game is that the item shops haven't been all too helpful. Most weapons are weaker than what I've found exploring, and the restorative items aren't too effective overall. Other than that, the game has been a blast to play and I highly recommend it if you like this style of game.
